If you are interested in staying overnight in San Juan, you can distinguish between the options in town and destinations outside it, and tailor your stay to your interests.
Accommodation and Getting Around San Juan
The town of San Juan has a hostel for overnight stays, restaurants, and small shops. Individual businesses may change, so check specific accommodation and service options before you travel. The Municipalidad Distrital de San Juan lists tourist tours and visitor information among its services. Check in advance whether these services are available during your travel dates.
Archaeology, Scenery, and History
Yanaorco, also known as Cerro Negro and listed under Tamiacocha, is located in the district. The archaeological settlement is attributed to the Cajamarca culture and dated to the Late Intermediate Period, from 1000 to 1465 AD. The archaeological zone covers around 46.6 hectares and lies at an altitude of about 3,550 meters. Yanaorco is also located on the continental divide. From there, views extend to El Gavilán Pass, 500 meters away, north to the Cajamarca Basin, and west into the upper Jequetepeque Valley.
The Ex Hacienda Huacraruco is also part of the district’s history. It is also known as Cooperativa Agraria SAIS José Carlos Mariátegui and was established in 1920 by Ministerial Resolution No. 1058-72 AG. It is classified as a Casa-Hacienda type of architectural heritage. The Casa Hacienda de Huacraruco was built around 1920 and belonged to the German Gildemeister family. The family supplied grain and livestock to workers at their other haciendas in Casa Grande, near Trujillo.
Another archaeological destination is the Ventanillas de la Peña de los Sapos in San Juan District. Described as a pre-Inca burial site, it consists of 84 niches carved into the rock, arranged one above another. There is no established path or tourist infrastructure there.
Hot Springs and Nearby Destinations
The Aguas Termales de Yumagual are a tourist attraction in the district and are considered a regional destination. The Municipalidad Distrital de San Juan reports a high monthly volume of tourists there. Features described include outdoor pools with water temperatures of 55 to 75 °C, which mixes with small streams of cold river water.
The Cascadas de las Bateas are located in the hamlet of Huacraruco. Their steady flow of water has carved pools into the rock, and the area extends for approximately one kilometer. Access is considered difficult because there is no established descent path. Gruta La Peña Blanca is 2.7 kilometers northwest of the town of San Juan, on a cliff above the road. It is known as a venue for introductory caving events; access is considered difficult and requires specialized equipment. Check in advance whether an event is being offered and what access conditions apply.
Festivals, Agriculture, and Religious Traditions
The festival of San Juan Bautista is celebrated annually in the district from June 14 to 25 in honor of its patron saint. It includes religious and cultural activities; check in advance for the program during the year you plan to travel. The Día del Campesino festival is also celebrated with particular emphasis in the district. The minga for the wheat harvest is a communal agricultural tradition that takes place mainly from June to August.
The cherimoya is the main fruit crop of San Juan District. A fair dedicated to it takes place annually during the first week of April, bringing together growers, merchants, and visitors. This means there are two distinct times of year to visit: the cherimoya fair in April, and the patron saint festival and minga from June to August.
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is considered an important religious and cultural center in the district. The Diocese of Cajamarca lists San Juan Bautista as a parish in San Juan; P. Javier Hoyos Huamán is listed as the parish priest.
