Jaén combines an annual Patron Saint’s Day celebration with archaeological, agricultural and scenic attractions nearby. If you’re looking for a hotel in Jaén, you can start planning your trip by deciding whether the city’s festival is your main focus or whether you’d also like to visit places outside Jaén. Distances range from just a few kilometres to more distant hot springs.

Patron Saint’s Day and Archaeological Heritage

Every year, Jaén celebrates Patron Saint’s Day in honour of its patron saint, Señor de Huamantanga. The main celebration takes place on 14 September; the exact programme may vary from year to year. If you’re travelling for the festivities, check the dates for that year in advance.

The archaeological site of Montegrande offers a different kind of journey, 3.5 kilometres south of the city. It was declared part of the nation’s cultural heritage on 17 November 2009. Montegrande comprises the first monumental architecture of a public and religious nature discovered in the Peruvian Amazon region. It was built by members of the Marañón culture from earth and rock 5,300 years ago. Alongside the annual festival, it offers a glimpse into early construction and cultural history, quite distinct from the agricultural experiences in the surrounding area.

Museum, Plant Life and Views

Jaén’s “Hermógenes Mejía Solf” Regional Museum is two kilometres from the city centre, in the building of the “4 de junio de 1821” Institute of Technology. Its collection includes numerous archaeological objects, especially from the Pakamuros culture: ceramics, goldwork, stone artefacts and fossils. The museum also covers topics ranging from anthropology and palaeontology to art, natural sciences and archaeology. As exhibitions may change, it’s advisable to ask about access and current displays before visiting.

The Botanical Garden is four kilometres southeast of the city, in the Fila Alta sector, third stage, and showcases more than 600 plant varieties from the region. It complements the archaeological and museum themes with a look at plant life. Ask about access before planning a visit. From the Jaén viewpoint, you can instead take in the entire city, as well as the surrounding green valleys and slopes.

Farms and Experiences Nearby

At Finca Agro Apícola La Arboleda, 6.2 kilometres from Jaén, visits to the coffee plantations and apiary are offered. A coordinated beekeeping experience can take you closer to the hives: you’ll learn about the queen bee and observe how worker bees produce honey. Arrange this visit in advance and ask about current visiting options.

Finca Paraíso de La Trucha is 24 kilometres from Jaén and combines coffee growing, trout farming and experiential tourism. Possible activities include taking part in the hosts’ daily routine, harvesting peas, potatoes and coffee, and feeding the animals. Experiences centred on organic coffee introduce you to the Catimor, Borbón and Caturra varieties. Food is also part of the farm’s offering: the restaurant serves dishes including fried trout, trout chicharrón and coffee brewed in a pot. Check whether the restaurant is currently operating before setting out. The forest around the farm is home to the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Huataracos, Majaz, armadillos and porcupines; sightings of these animals are not guaranteed.

A waterfall trip takes you to Cascada Santa Fe, 16.9 kilometres from Jaén. From the hamlet of Santa Fe, it’s a 15-minute walk to reach it. A local guide is recommended for finding your way; check current conditions before setting out.

Aguas Termales del Almendral is 25 kilometres from Jaén, near the confluence of the Chamaya and Marañón rivers. Sulphur- and iron-rich thermal waters emerge there, and the site is considered a spa resort. Before setting out, check current access conditions and the facilities available.
