San Pedro: Archaeology in the Surrounding Area and Local Culture
Accommodation in San Pedro
San Pedro combines practical orientation in town with an archaeological landmark in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it is useful to distinguish between these two: the municipal tourist information office is in San Pedro, while Chillwamarka is in the Santa Isabel area. There are also cultural connections that shift the focus from the archaeological site to the district’s traditions. This lets you plan your stay around your interests without treating a visit to town and an excursion destination as the same place.
Finding your way around town
San Pedro has a municipal tourist information office at Avenida José María Arguedas No. 344. Check locally on visitor access and opening arrangements before basing your day’s plans on a visit there. The address provides a specific landmark in town; Chillwamarka, by contrast, is located nearby in the Santa Isabel area as an archaeological complex. This distinction is useful if you want to combine information about the town with route planning for the site.
Chillwamarka in the surrounding area
Chillwamarka, also known in the district of San Pedro as Ñaupallaccta (“old village”), is a pre-Inca urban complex. The archaeological zone covers approximately 36 hectares. It lies at an altitude of about 3,400 m and around 500 m from the annex of Santa Isabel. Circular buildings, palaces, and dwellings of the Chillwamarkas remain. Several perspectives come together when describing the site: the term “urban complex,” the approximate size of the area, and the range of building types mentioned. If you are interested in archaeology, you can consider these aspects separately: the area and location provide the context, while the surviving structures describe the specific architectural range.
Route to the archaeological zone
The route to the archaeological zone starts at Plaza San Pedro. From there, a combi takes approximately 15 minutes to cover about 3.6 km to Santa Isabel; from there, it is around 550 m, or approximately ten minutes on foot, to Chillwamarka. Confirm the connection locally, as the route details are intended as a guide. The key point for planning your time is to distinguish between the stages: the stated walking time applies only to the stretch from Santa Isabel, not to the entire route from the plaza.
Cultural connections in the district
The celebration “Sequia Tusuy – Fiesta del Agua” is associated with the district of San Pedro. The bill 12967/2025-CR considered by Congress sought to declare it national intangible cultural heritage; it was a proposal, not a completed recognition. The description presented in it connects the celebration with Andean ideas about water, reciprocity (ayni), community organization, and the agricultural cycle.
The XXIX Feria Distrital Agropecuaria, Agroindustrial, Gastronómica, Artesanal, Folklórica San Pedro was approved for 2025; approval did not automatically mean that the fair actually took place. Its official title refers to agriculture, agroindustry, gastronomy, crafts, and folklore. This broad range of themes offers further insight into the district’s cultural and agricultural connections, distinct from the archaeological features of Chillwamarka.
