Plaza de Armas and architectural history
The Plaza de Armas de Huanta is part of Peru’s national cultural heritage and is designated an Ambiente Urbano Monumental. It dates back to 1852. The Iglesia San Pedro Matriz de Huanta stands in the plaza, with a history dating back to 1724. The church’s original structure is preserved in the Capilla del Rosario, which is also the oldest part of the church. The fountain in the plaza has its own date: it was completed in 1869. These dates refer to different elements, not to a single construction year. Palm trees, pati and jacaranda trees, and retama blossoms shape the plaza’s design.
City walk and local monuments
The Ă“valo de la Madre Huantina is part of the traditional city walk through Huanta. Another notable landmark is Parque de AmĂlcar Gamarra: covering 150 m², it features a life-size statue of Huanta-born artist HĂ©ctor AmĂlcar Gamarra Altamirano. The sculpture El Obispo de Piedra Santiago Ophelan is located 50 meters from the Plaza de Armas; the walk takes approximately three minutes. Together, these places offer different ways to explore Huanta’s history and the people commemorated in its public spaces.
Views and nearby destinations
The Mirador de la ciudad de Huanta offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. From the Plaza de Armas, the viewpoint can be reached by mototaxi in around ten minutes. This is an estimated travel time and may vary. Valle de Huanta is also about ten minutes from the main plaza. Boat trips along the river are offered there; operating conditions may vary, so check in advance. Another nearby destination is Cascada de Occochaca, described as approximately 40 meters high. Alongside the viewpoint, the waterfall offers another way to experience the landscape when planning your trip.
Regional cuisine and Chicha 7 semillas
Near Valle de Huanta, recreos campestres serve typical local cuisine based on regional produce. The individual establishments may change, so check the current options before your visit. Another culinary point of interest is the traditional Barrio de 5 Esquinas, where most of the shops selling traditional Chicha 7 semillas are located. This refers to local availability in a neighborhood, not to a documented tasting or guided tour. If Chicha interests you, the neighborhood offers a specific connection to regional food culture.
