In the associated municipality, topics range from nature conservation and Muisca history to aviation, motorcycles, archaeology and rural culture. The sites have different focuses: some center on a natural area, while others highlight the history of technology or memories of earlier ways of life. This lets you decide which topics matter for planning your trip.

Nature and Muisca history

The Reserva Natural Ecoparque Sabana is located on the grounds of Fundación Parque Jaime Duque. It covers 60 hectares; its activities are dedicated to the preservation of life, historical memory and nature. The Ecoparque thus combines nature-related topics with a focus on memory and history.

Within the protected area, the five-kilometer Sendero de la Memoria Muisca is a loop trail through the landscape. Depictions of Muisca culture give the trail its historical focus. The trail’s length and historical focus describe two different aspects of the loop: its scope and the subject it explores.

At Humedal Jaime Duque, visitors can observe species including the Tingua moteada, the Pato turrio and the Monjita cabeciamarilla. There is also an educational area for families. Birdwatching is therefore complemented by an educational offering, while the Sendero focuses on Muisca history.

Aviation, motorcycles and motorsports

The Museo Aeroespacial Colombiano is devoted to the history of the military aircraft that have protected Colombian airspace. The Museo de Motos El Reto specializes in motorcycles and grew out of an interest in sharing their history and development in Colombia. The two museums highlight different aspects of technological history: one focuses on military aircraft and airspace, the other on motorcycles and their development in the country.

Another motorsports venue is the Kartódromo Juan Pablo Montoya. It is located in the northwestern part of the Autódromo de Tocancipá and opened in December 2002 in honor of Colombian racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya. The opening date and dedication are linked: they place the Kartódromo’s name in the context of its history.

Archaeology, rural history and remembrance

The Camino del Gone is connected to the history of Valle del Abra. Early inhabitants of the areas of Tocancipá, Gachancipá, Nemocón and Zipaquirá traveled this route primarily to exchange goods. Accounts of the route thus connect it with exchange between several areas and with its earlier use as a trade route.

In 2018, Resolution 304 of the ICANH declared the Abrigo Rocoso del Valle del Abra a nationally protected archaeological area. Its protected status and the year it was designated distinguish this site from museums that focus on the history of particular subjects.

Hacienda Normandía features a colonial manor house that is more than 150 years old and is a prominent feature of the rural landscape of Vereda La Fuente. Architecture and landscape are integral to the site’s character: the manor house is not separate from its surroundings, but helps shape the image of this rural area.

The Monumento al Ollero is based on an original drawing by the colonial-era painter Don Ramón Torres Méndez. It depicts the traditional work of the area’s inhabitants. Together with the hacienda, it offers a way to explore rural history from different perspectives: the hacienda through a colonial manor house, and the monument through a depiction of traditional work.

The Festival de la Colombianidad was established as a way to introduce the cultural, musical and recreational investments of the municipality to the community of Tocancipá and its visitors. Its stated purpose gives the festival a distinct cultural focus alongside the sites that foreground nature, technology or history.
