Colbún combines waterside landscapes and nature with a town center of its own. When choosing a hotel destination, you can consider whether reservoirs, water sports, and wildlife watching or a stroll through the center will shape your stay more. The commune offers a range of points of interest: Paseo Pretil Machicura, Balneario Machicura, and the main square.

Reservoirs and Nature

Colbún has two reservoirs surrounded by native forests. Embalse Machicura covers 8 km². In Colbún’s natural surroundings, you can observe the native flora and fauna of the Maule Region. Wildlife watching is therefore a travel experience in its own right, alongside activities on the water.

A Walk Along Machicura

Paseo Pretil Machicura is located in the commune of Colbún, along Route L-11 in front of the reservoir. The pedestrian promenade is 200 meters long and 6.3 meters wide. It has benches and a viewpoint overlooking Embalse Machicura and the surrounding natural landscape. Families and tourists can stroll there, enjoy the scenery, watch birds, and get information about them.

Balneario Machicura is located in the commune of Colbún, on the southwestern shore of Embalse Machicura. It has a 150-meter-long beach and a pier for non-motorized boats. Its facilities also include a picnic area, a children’s play area, and stalls run by local entrepreneurs. The 150-meter-long beach and pier are at the Balneario, while the 200-meter length and 6.3-meter width refer to the Paseo pedestrian promenade. This distinction can help with planning: the Balneario is focused on the beach and non-motorized boats, while the Paseo is suited to walking, enjoying the view, and birdwatching.

Water Sports and Town Center

Water skiing and kayaking are offered as water sports on Lakes Colbún and Machicura; sailing is also listed as a water sport. If one of these activities is a deciding factor for your trip, please check in advance whether it is currently available.

In the center of Colbún, the main square is a pleasant place to stroll. Around the square, there are restaurants serving traditional Chilean home cooking. This gives the town center a distinct character alongside the nature and water-related attractions: when planning your trip, you can also consider strolling and dining in the center rather than focusing exclusively on the reservoirs.

Regional Context

The ZOIT Lago Colbún–Rari includes parts of the communes of Colbún and San Clemente, which share the administrative area along the north and south shores of Lago Colbún. This tourist zone provides a regional context that extends beyond the commune boundaries. The distinction matters when choosing where to stay: Colbún refers to the destination, while the ZOIT also includes parts of San Clemente.
