Biobío Province: Hiking Trails, Railway Heritage and Festivals
Accommodation in Biobío Province
Two hiking trails in Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja show how much the time required for an outing in Biobío Province can vary. Railway history and recurring festivals are also experiences that can be factored into different travel plans.
Hiking Trails in Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja
Parque Nacional Laguna del Laja is located in Antuco. Its diverse ecological and scenic habitats are particularly shaped by mountains and snow, making it a place for recreation. The park thus provides a natural setting for two hiking trails that differ considerably in length and duration.
Sendero Los Pangues is 1 km long and takes about 45 minutes in total. It is considered easy; facilities include bridges, a boardwalk and a viewpoint. At 9.6 km, Sendero Sierra Velluda is much longer and takes 5 to 7 hours in total. It is rated moderate.
For planning your time, the difference is clear: Los Pangues takes about three-quarters of an hour, while Sierra Velluda is a hike lasting several hours. The difficulty rating also differs, from easy to moderate. Trail conditions can change seasonally; check the latest CONAF advisories before setting out.
Railway Heritage in San Rosendo and Yumbel
The new Paseo Ferroviario de San Rosendo complements the town’s railway complex. It includes an amphitheater, a children’s play area, a historical walking tour and an amenities area. On May 24, 2023, the railway complex was declared a National Monument in the Historical Monument category. This directly connects the present-day Paseo with the history of the protected complex.
Yumbel’s railway station also tells the story of the railway’s importance to commerce: it opened in 1873 as part of the Curicó–Talcahuano–Chillán and Angol railway lines and grew into an important trading center. The station building was damaged in 2010. The station’s history is therefore shaped both by its early role in rail transport and by this later setback.
Another landmark in Yumbel is the Santuario de San Sebastián. It is located in the center, opposite the Plaza de Armas. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the town with a visit to its central religious landmark.
Festivals and Traditions in Yumbel
The Festividad de San Sebastián takes place every year on January 20 and March 20 in Yumbel. Hundreds of pilgrims from all over Chile come to the celebrations. The two dates give the festival a fixed place in the annual calendar and provide a specific point of reference if you want to plan your trip around it.
In January, the Trilla a Yegua Suelta gives visitors and residents the opportunity to learn about the entire process of corta, emparva and trilla. This sets the Trilla apart from the pilgrimage dates: the focus is on a traditional process presented through several named stages of work.
The Medieval Fest takes place in October. Its program includes historical reenactments, artistic performances, combat demonstrations, and music and dances from the period. The Muestra Campesina showcases another side of local offerings, with more than 180 exhibitors presenting agricultural products, traditional cuisine and handicrafts.
The events have different focuses and take place in different months or on specific calendar dates. If you plan your trip around a festival, check the latest dates and program details in advance; the number of exhibitors and the program at the Muestra Campesina may also vary.
