Arauco Province stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Nahuelbuta Range. Its landscapes include ancient forests and native fauna. Lakes, cultural sites and specific travel conditions offer different ways to shape your trip: you can combine time by the water with hikes, learn about Mapuche culture or explore historic places.

Lakes and activities by the water

Lago Lanalhue lies between the municipalities of Cañete and Contulmo in the Nahuelbuta Range. Trails along the shore invite you to hike, and the area is home to a variety of native flora and fauna. Water skiing and kayaking are also possible on the lake. This brings nature watching and water activities together, without requiring you to focus on just one kind of stay.

Lago Lleu Lleu is also nearby and covers an area of 4,300 hectares. Activities there include kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, trekking in the surrounding area and horseback riding. Kayaking is available on both lakes; water skiing is listed for Lago Lanalhue, while windsurfing and fishing are listed for Lago Lleu Lleu. This makes it possible to compare the activities on offer when deciding whether to focus your stay on hiking, water sports or other outdoor pursuits.

Lago Lleu Lleu lies on the western slope of the Nahuelbuta Range. It is 40 kilometers south of Cañete via the San Ramón access route and 14 kilometers from the access route in the municipality of Contulmo. These distances refer to the specified access routes and provide a concrete guide for planning.

Mapuche culture and history in Cañete

In Cañete, Fuerte de Tucapel tells the story of the region: the fort was the setting for important events during the Arauco War. The Museo Mapuche has six publicly accessible, adapted rooms that present Mapuche territory and the Mapuche worldview. The two sites offer different ways to engage—with historical events at one, and culture and worldview at the other.

Cementerio o EltĂșn de Antiquina, also in the municipality of Cañete, is a site of cultural significance. Its material and intangible values are rooted in the worldview of the Mapuche people and remain alive today. Ruka-Lelbun, in turn, offers visitors a short presentation of traditional Mapuche customs, gastronomy and crafts. Those interested in these topics will find different ways here to encounter tradition and culture.

Architecture and places of remembrance in Contulmo

In Contulmo, a walking tour of 18 houses with heritage-listed architecture associated with the German founders is recommended. On Millaray Street are the Pfaaff and Vhymeister houses, as well as the former Hotel Central. The poet Pablo Neruda was among the guests at this former hotel. The houses and the former hotel give the walk a distinctive historical and architectural focus.

Isla Mocha: nature and access

The endemic seabird species Fardela blanca (Ardenna creatopus), which is classified as endangered and is of particular scientific and tourist interest, lives in Reserva Nacional Isla Mocha. The island reserve can be reached by air taxi; flights depart from TirĂșa airfield or Carriel Sur Airport in ConcepciĂłn.

Maritime access from Lebu or TirĂșa is limited to freight transport, depends on the weather and boat availability, and is not offered regularly. If you are planning a trip to Reserva Nacional Isla Mocha, check the access conditions again in advance. The difference between the air taxi and the limited maritime service is an important part of your planning.

Further cultural connections

Palomitas de Laraquete are associated with the municipality of Arauco and are recognized as a Tesoro Humano Vivo. Together with the cultural sites in Cañete and Contulmo, they broaden the perspective on the different traditions and historical connections within Arauco Province.
