At Monumento Natural La Portada, a large marine sediment arch and a cliff shaped by marine erosion define the protected coastal landscape. The arch is known as La Portada. From the coast to high-altitude lagoons, nature is a central theme of the trip, along with marked trails and places of cultural heritage. When planning your hotel stay, consider which of these highlights you would like to focus on.

Coast, Wildlife Watching and Trails

Parque Nacional Morro Moreno encompasses continental, marine and insular habitats. Humboldt penguins, chungungos and sea lions can be spotted along its coast. The park also has marked trails and information panels about the surroundings. Trail availability may change due to weather or management conditions; check before your visit.

At Monumento Natural La Portada, the 430-metre-long Sendero de Humboldt runs through the area. It is considered an easy hiking trail, with a total duration of 45 to 60 minutes. The short distance and the stated total duration are separate planning details. Trail conditions and seasonal closures may change, so it is worth checking the latest visitor information.

Andean Landscapes and Highland Destinations

The mountain ranges of the Andes and the Cordillera de Domeyko define the landscape of Parque Nacional Llullaillaco. The park includes a section of the Qhapaq Ñan and a high-altitude Inca shrine on the summit of the Llullaillaco volcano. Possible activities include hiking on marked trails, nature watching with a particular focus on mammals and birds, mountain biking, and climbing the volcano. General access is restricted; a permit is required for climbs and scientific expeditions. The current CONAF permit and safety procedures must be followed for the activities mentioned.

Laguna Miscanti lies at about 4,000 metres above sea level in a natural landscape surrounded by high peaks. The loop trail around the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons offers opportunities to observe flamingos, or parinas. As access rules may change, check the latest visitor information before making plans.

Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos has camping and picnic areas, an environmental information centre, public parking and public toilets. Visitor facilities may not always be available, so check before your visit. Termas de Puritama consists of thermal pools in a mountain gorge. The thermal water is reported to have a constant temperature of 25 to 30 °C. Access and facilities may also change, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions.

Culture and Local Character

Pukará de Quitor is an Indigenous fortress built by the Atacameño people in the 12th century. The site adds a historical perspective to a trip that can also be shaped by landscapes and outdoor activities.

Toconao is an oasis whose pure water makes it possible to grow a wide variety of fruits. This gives the town an agricultural dimension alongside the coastal and highland landscapes.

Excursions and Day Planning

Valle de la Luna is a natural sanctuary in the Cordillera de la Sal. Water and wind erosion have created grey, red and ochre-coloured mineral formations there. From San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna is 15 kilometres away via Ruta 23; you can get there by private vehicle, bicycle or as part of a guided tour. Road and access conditions may change, so check them in advance.

Tours from San Pedro de Atacama to Géiseres del Tatio are scheduled to set off at dawn, at around 4:00 am, and arrive at sunrise. The exact schedule may change; check the current departure time before making plans. This early start can be treated as a distinct part of the day’s itinerary, while trails, wildlife watching and cultural sites offer other ways to shape the trip.
