Metropolitan Region: Nature, High Mountains and Culture
Accommodation in Metropolitan Region
A turquoise lake at 2,500 meters, a 737-hectare urban park and a 1.2-kilometer hiking trail illustrate the range of the Metropolitan Region. Its diverse destinations include protected areas, high-mountain locations and cultural sites. When planning, it is worth first deciding which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.
Nature Between River Landscapes and High Mountains
Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo is located in the municipality of Pirque, Cordillera Province. The protected area preserves flora and fauna, including the birds Comesebo, Fiofío and Ralladito, as well as predominantly Nearctic mammals from the dog, mustelid and cat families. On site, there are hiking trails, picnic areas for cold meals and an environmental information center.
The Sendero Trikau in Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo is 1.2 km long; the stated total hiking time is 40 minutes, and the difficulty level is easy. Visitor facilities include accessible restrooms and picnic areas, sections of accessible trails and parking. There is also a trail with Braille and relief panels, an accessible viewpoint, and wheelchair and monocycle support for inclusive tours. As visitor conditions can change, check the current status of facilities and trail conditions before your visit.
Another protected area is Parque Nacional Glaciares de Santiago in the municipality of San José de Maipo. It protects high-mountain glaciers, the Colorado and Olivares rivers, native high-mountain flora and native fauna, particularly species with protected status. Unlike Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo, this national park does not offer visitor services or infrastructure for public use. Check conditions before planning access.
Parque Metropolitano de Santiago offers another contrast: the 737-hectare urban park extends across Providencia, Recoleta, Huechuraba and Vitacura. Together, the protected areas and the park show how varied nature destinations can be within the region—from protecting high-alpine habitats to a large park spanning several municipalities.
Cajón del Maipo and Mountain Towns
Cajón del Maipo is a valley shaped by the Andes and traversed by the Río Maipo. It is home to Embalse El Yeso, a turquoise lake at an elevation of 2,500 meters. Visitors can relax at Termas Valle de Colina; check operating conditions before your trip. Farellones is also located in the Cordillera within the Metropolitan Region, at an elevation of more than 2,300 meters. These places offer different points of interest for travelers interested in mountain landscapes.
San José de Maipo combines its mountain setting with a historic townscape: around the Plaza de Armas, you’ll find classical architecture and the heritage-listed church; local cuisine is also part of the town’s character. Those weighing nature and cultural interests for their stay can therefore consider this town differently from a hike in Reserva Nacional Río Clarillo or a visit to a protected area.
Museo Andino and Chilean Wine Tradition
In Alto Jahuel, in the municipality of Buin, Museo Andino preserves a collection of more than 3,000 archaeological pieces representing Chilean and American history. Fundación Claro Vial opened the collection in 2006. The museum is located at Camino Padre Hurtado 0695. For a trip focused on culture, Alto Jahuel is therefore a distinct point of interest within the region.
Also in Alto Jahuel, Buin, Viña Santa Rita is open to visitors. There, Chilean wine tradition, culture and gastronomy come together with the history of Chile in a unique natural setting. These two destinations in Alto Jahuel offer a different focus from the protected areas or mountain towns.
Route and Hotel Planning
The main access route from Santiago to San José de Maipo is Ruta G-25, also known as Camino al Volcán. It begins at the end of Avenida La Florida. Buses and colectivos connect Santiago with Cajón del Maipo. As routes and public transport should be checked before your trip, find out in good time about the connections relevant to your specific destinations.
The location information for Pirque, Buin and San José de Maipo can help structure your choices. Plan your accommodation around the destinations you actually want to include, and check travel arrangements for those places rather than assuming a particular journey time or connection.
