Tortel between the Río Baker and wooden walkways
Accommodation in Tortel
Caleta Tortel is located in Capitán Prat Province at the mouth of the Río Baker. Its car-free architecture and seven kilometers of walkways made from Guaitecas cypress wood define the town; the walkways run along the river mouth. Since 2001, the Pueblo de Caleta Tortel sector has been designated a Zona Típica.
Logging Tradition and Culture
Since 2015, the Fiesta del Madereo has celebrated the logging tradition, which is important to the commune’s historical and economic development. The festival includes demonstrations of traditional techniques, as well as traditional music and dances. It takes place every year at the Parque Costumbrista de Tortel, usually on the first weekend of February. Individual program items may vary from one edition to another. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year in question.
A description from September 2023 also mentions the Tortel Trail as a sporting and tourism event in Caleta Tortel. It lists a 4 km category for individual participants and a 4 km children’s category. The longer categories combine kayaking and trail sections: the middle-distance duathlon includes 8 km of kayaking and 4 km of trail, while the expert category includes 11 km of kayaking and 4 km of trail.
Trails and Scenery
The Sendero Cerro Vigía is a marked tourist trail over Cerro la Bandera in Caleta Tortel. From there, panoramic views open up over the Río Baker delta, the channels, and the Patagonian fjords. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit.
North of Caleta Tortel, Isla de los Muertos lies in the Río Baker delta at its mouth. The island is considered a heritage site and can be visited from Caleta Tortel. The Río Pascua also offers opportunities for scenic walks along its banks, where you can observe local flora and fauna in their natural habitat. A boat trip from Caleta Tortel goes as far as the mouth of the Río Pascua; it offers a different perspective on the river from the trails along its banks.
Boat Excursions
Several operators offer day trips from Caleta Tortel to Jorge Montt Glacier. The trips use traditional wooden boats or fast boats made of composite materials; they usually have room for around ten passengers. Check availability before your trip. Another boat trip goes from Caleta Tortel via Canal Steffen and the Río Huemules to Steffen Glacier. Navigation there depends on weather and river conditions.
A kayaking route described in September 2023 runs through the branches of the Río Baker and offers views of a large part of Caleta Tortel’s navigation routes. It differs from the boat trips mentioned above to glaciers and river mouths: here, the focus is on the waterways of the Río Baker and views of the town’s navigation routes.
