A map from 2019 lists El Remanso among the attractions around Coyhaique. This provides a specific map reference for searching for the destination. For further orientation, it is also worth exploring the Aisén Region: its landscapes range from lakes and waterfalls to national parks, hiking trails, and the Carretera Austral.

Towns, Lakes, and Waterfalls

Villa Lago Atravesado is a village surrounded by mountains, near Laguna Cea and Lago Atravesado. The village has grocery stores and a restaurant. If you plan to shop or dine at the restaurant, check availability in advance.

Lago Atravesado is of glacial origin, lies among mountains, and offers opportunities for recreational fishing. The lakeside landscape thus combines with a specific activity on the water. At Cascada del Lago Atravesado, there are two benches beside the road; the small shrine of Nuestra Señora de los Andes is also located there. The waterfall carries more water in spring, so its appearance changes with the seasons.

In the wider region, Laguna Cea offers several ways to enjoy the water: its shoreline is used as a bathing area, people fish from boats, and triathletes train in swimming there. These are different ways of experiencing the same lagoon—spending time on the shore, fishing on the water, and swimming for training.

In the wider region, the six-lagoon tourist route includes Laguna Burgos, Laguna Mercedes, Laguna Blanca, Laguna Espejo, Laguna Barroso, and Laguna Las Maletas. The route is considered particularly scenic and is suitable for photography. As a regional nature attraction, it complements the individual lake and waterfall highlights.

Aisén Region: Glaciers, Parks, and Trails

Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael is in the Región Aysén and is known for the glacier and Laguna San Rafael. Large blocks of ice break off the glacier and fall into the lagoon. In 1979, UNESCO designated the park a Biosphere Reserve. Activities available there include boating, fishing, excursions, observing flora and fauna, photography, and mountaineering. Available activities and access requirements may vary by sector and season.

Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo offers a different landscape: it includes mountain formations, lagoons, rivers rich in water, dense forests of native species, and diverse Patagonian wildlife. The park is also an important habitat for the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus). Long hikes are one way to experience nature there; seasonal closures and guide requirements may change.

In Parque Nacional Queulat, the hanging Queulat Glacier, also known as Colgante, hangs between two mountains and forms an icefall into the lagoon of the same name. The park is directly accessible via the Carretera Austral (Ruta 7), which runs through a large part of the park. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting off.

The Carretera Austral is more than 1,200 kilometers long and is the main transport route through the Región Aysén. It passes through native forests, past glaciers and crystal-clear rivers, and through rugged fjords. Another contrast in the landscape can be found along the Ruta de los Valles: this network of natural hiking trails lies in the northeast of the Región Aysén, near La Junta, and passes through glaciated valleys with lakes, rivers, waterfalls, evergreen forests, and native wildlife. Trail conditions and local access may vary.

Caleta Tortel also gives the Aisén Region its own distinctive character: the settlement is built over the water, and wooden walkways form the routes and connect the houses. The region thus brings together very different impressions—from glacier and lake landscapes to a settlement whose layout is part of its distinctive character.
