Discover Pedro Leopoldo: Culture, History and Karst Landscapes
Accommodation in Pedro Leopoldo
Pedro Leopoldo offers different perspectives on culture, history and landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in Chico Xavier’s life story, historic sites or experiences in a karst landscape. Each attraction and activity has its own focus.
Culture and Remembrance in Pedro Leopoldo
The Casa de Chico Xavier preserves personal belongings, original furniture, documents and photographs from Chico Xavier’s life. The collection therefore includes a wide range of artifacts: from furniture and personal objects to written documents and images. Its focus is Chico Xavier’s biography.
The old Pedro Leopoldo railway station stands at Praça da Estação. It has been transformed into a place of remembrance and culture and includes the “Estação de Memórias” project. While the Casa de Chico Xavier preserves personal mementos, the former railway station gives Praça da Estação its historical character. Praça da Estação is also associated with major cultural events such as the Festival de Luz, arts and crafts fairs and fairs featuring typical foods, exhibitions, as well as sports and outdoor activities. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the specific dates.
Casa Fernão Dias in Pedro Leopoldo offers another historical perspective, at an entrance to the park. There, three sets of display panels explain the Estrada Real do Sumidouro and its history. They are accompanied by reproductions of old maps and excerpts from D. Pedro II’s travel diary about his journey through Minas Gerais in 1881. In it, he describes landscapes, old estates, and visits to Lagoa Santa and caves in the region. The panels and excerpts on site may change. In terms of content, the information about the Estrada Real do Sumidouro and the 1881 travel account complement one another, while emphasizing different aspects.
Karst Landscapes and Activities
Gruta do Baú is located in the Fidalgo district of Pedro Leopoldo. Its features include limestone formations shaped by water and time, caves and natural pools. The focus here is on geological formations and landscape; Parque Estadual do Sumidouro also offers specifically named hiking trails and climbing options.
Parque Estadual do Sumidouro is located in the municipalities of Lagoa Santa and Pedro Leopoldo. Its three hiking trails are Circuito Lapinha, Trilha da Travessia and Trilha do Sumidouro. There are also three climbing options on the Lapinha Massifs, with varying levels of difficulty. The trails offer views of karst landforms, typical Cerrado species, historical sites and visual evidence of early human settlement. When comparing the options, you can distinguish between hiking with landscape and history highlights and climbing routes with varying levels of difficulty.
Additional Highlights in the Wider Pedro Leopoldo Destination
The wider Pedro Leopoldo destination also has historical connections to Chico Xavier. He founded Centro Espírita Luiz Gonzaga in Pedro Leopoldo on June 21, 1927. Another historical reference is the discovery of the skull “Luzia”: the Franco-Brazilian mission discovered it in 1975 during excavations at the Lapa Vermelha IV archaeological site, in what is now the municipality of Pedro Leopoldo. These two points relate to different subjects: the founding of a religious institution and archaeological excavations.
Cachoeira do Urubu is also part of the wider Pedro Leopoldo destination. The waterfall is about 15 meters high; its natural pool is approximately 80 centimeters deep and is suitable for swimming and enjoying the landscape. These measurements are approximate, and water conditions can vary. If you plan to swim there, take these changing conditions into account.
