Cataguases: Modern Architecture and Art
Accommodation in Cataguases
Architecture, art, and urban history are a clear thematic focus in Cataguases. The city has a rich collection of modern architecture from 1940 to 1960, including works by Oscar Niemeyer and other prominent architects and artists of the period. If you are looking for a hotel in Cataguases, you might consider whether you are most interested in architectural design, an unusually shaped sanctuary, or the history of a company.
Modern Architecture and Art
The Educandário Dom Silvério has a modernist-style azulejo façade dated 1954. The same building houses the mural “A Criação do Mundo,” created by Emeric Marcier in 1956. The Educandário is considered an important work of Cataguases’s cultural heritage. It combines the design of the façade with its own mural: two distinct artistic references within one building.
The Santuário de Santa Rita de Cássia in Cataguases dates from 1968 and is shaped like an airplane. Its façade features an azulejo panel created by the painter Djanira da Motta e Silva. Compared with the Educandário, the sanctuary stands out for its airplane shape and façade panel, while the Educandário’s architectural and artistic character is shaped by its modernist style and mural. These are two buildings with distinct design features.
The dates can also be compared: the Educandário’s façade is dated 1954, Marcier created the mural in 1956, and the sanctuary dates from 1968. While the first two dates connect two art forms within one building, the sanctuary makes a different architectural statement with its airplane shape and azulejo panel. The examples can thus be distinguished by building, art form, and period.
Company History and Other Artistic References
The Museu Energisa is housed in an Art Nouveau-inspired mansion on one of the main streets in central Cataguases. Its collection covers the history of Companhia Força e Luz Cataguazes–Leopoldina through its development into Grupo Energisa. This adds company history as a distinct thematic perspective alongside architecture and visual art. The museum thus connects the architecture of its building with a collection theme that spans the company’s evolution under several names.
The panel painting “Tiradentes” by Candido Portinari is also among Cataguases’s artistic references. It was originally created for Colégio Cataguases and was located in Cataguases. The original commission and its historical connection to the city give the painting a different perspective from the façade works and murals: the focus here is on a standalone panel painting with a named destination.
Cultural Route
The first visit along the tourist route “Cataguases – Moderna e Eterna” took place with students in grades 6 to 9. During the visit, the route led to various attractions around the city and connected tourism and education with the appreciation of cultural heritage.
