Rosario Department brings together Rosario’s history, diverse museum collections, parks, and Paraná riverfront areas with attractions in places such as Funes and Granadero Baigorria. These different highlights offer practical starting points for exploring the area.

Rosario and the Paraná

On the banks of the Paraná, the Monumento Nacional a la Bandera stands at the historic site of the Libertad Battery. There, on February 27, 1812, General Manuel Belgrano first raised the Argentine national flag. The central tower is 75 meters high; an elevator takes visitors to a lookout point with panoramic views. The monument thus connects a pivotal moment in Argentine history with a striking vantage point.

On Rosario’s northern coast lies Rambla Catalunya, a free promenade with a beach area that is open to the public. The beaches can be reached by public transport via the Línea de la Costa. Buses cross central Rosario and run to the beaches daily in summer. As transport services can change, it is advisable to check the current schedule in advance. Another waterfront route is the Paseo del Caminante: this wide concrete promenade runs along the river for pedestrians and is 1,000 meters long.

La Florida is also one of Rosario’s beach destinations. It was approved as a beach resort in 1933; in summer, events, activities, and services are concentrated along its 400-meter beach. Seasonal offerings may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting.

Parks and city history

Parque de la Independencia is Rosario’s largest and oldest traditional park. Carlos Thays designed it around 1900 to celebrate the centenary of Argentine independence in 1910. His design can be divided into four areas representing major European immigrant communities that shaped the city. The park is home to the Museo de la Ciudad and the Museo Histórico Provincial Julio Marc.

The Museo de la Ciudad presents the history of Rosario, the city’s cultural achievements, and the people and institutions that contributed to its creation. The development of Rosario’s identity is also among its themes. The Museo Histórico Provincial Julio Marc is located in the heart of the park and has 38 galleries. Its collections include Hispano-American art, numismatics and medallic art, pre-Columbian objects, textiles, and numerous antique weapons.

Other museums focus on different subjects: the Museo Municipal de Arte Decorativo “Firma y Odilo Estévez” displays the collections of the Estévez couple, including furniture, tapestries, paintings, sculptures, porcelain, crystal, hardstones, ivory, and silverware. The paintings include a work by Goya. The building now occupied by the Museo de la Memoria, formerly the “Ex Comando del II Cuerpo de Ejército,” was designed in 1928 by architect Ermete De Lorenzi.

The Museo de Arte Sacro, beneath the catacombs of Teatro El Círculo, houses works by artist and sculptor Eduardo Barnes. Another architectural connection between city history and contemporary art can be seen at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Rosario (MACRO): it occupies former grain silos built as part of the early-20th-century port architecture on the river and houses Argentina’s most important collection of contemporary art. The Museo del Deporte Santafesino, meanwhile, presents sports history through stories of events, leading figures, and defining moments, as well as displayed objects and audiovisual installations.

Activities on the water and in green spaces

The Acuario del río Paraná explores the biodiversity of the Paraná Delta. Its features include a native plant park, a research center, and ten large aquariums. On the first floor, there are interactive educational games; on the second floor, there is a bar area and a terrace. The different spaces approach river nature from both a research and an educational perspective.

In Granadero Baigorria, tourism offerings include fishing at Bajada Formosa, water sports such as kayaking, SUP, and hydrobiking, as well as boat trips. Hiking on Isla de los Mástiles is another activity on offer. Travelers comparing ideas will find a range of ways to explore by water and on foot, without needing to follow a set itinerary.

El Jardín de los Niños in Rosario brings together several designed spaces and activities. La montañita encantada is a maze-like walk featuring false entrances, obstacles, and signs. Other attractions include the educational installation Leonardo, el inventor and flight and harness activities at the Máquina de volar. The Máquina de trepar features two 16th-century brigantines designed for climbing. The Tríptico de la Infancia also includes the “Hacer nacer” area, with a nursery, an organic garden, and a butterfly garden, as well as activities such as watering, sowing, harvesting, weeding, and working the soil.

Funes and local markets

Two museums in Funes focus on local and technological history. The Museo Ferroviario Juan Murray recounts the origins and development of the city, as well as the history of steam locomotives and the railway in Argentina and its close ties to Funes. The Museo Pedagógico del Liceo Aeronáutico Militar explores the development of aviation, its pioneers and achievements, and the development of space technology in Argentina. Funes also invites visitors to enjoy experiences related to cycling culture and organic production.

Markets are also part of the visitor experience in Rosario. Mercado del Patio is a food market where producers and business owners connect directly with the public; it has more than 20 food sections. Every weekend, 120 artisan stalls are set up at the Feria del Boulevard, along Boulevard Oroño and by the river.
