Discover General López Department
Accommodation in General López Department
Villa Cañás in General López Department combines water activities with cultural sites and local history. For planning your trip, it is worth looking at the different visiting options: some are included in a guided tour, while others require an appointment in advance.
Water sports at Laguna Virginia L. de Díaz
Laguna Virginia L. de Díaz is a bathing resort with almost 700 meters of shoreline. Motorboating, rowing, and sailing are possible there. This makes the lagoon a clear destination if water sports are among your travel interests. Conditions may vary; check them before your visit.
In December 2025, the municipality opened the 2025–2026 season at the “Virginia L. de Díaz” Municipal Bathing Resort. For this season, it announced artistic and cultural activities, water sports, a swimming pool, recreational games, and open spaces. If you plan to enjoy these seasonal offerings, check in advance to confirm current operations.
Cultural sites and visits by appointment
A tour of Villa Cañás includes a visit to the Centro Cultural, Sala Joselo Martínez Suarez. An interior visit to the childhood home of the Martínez Suarez brothers can also be arranged as part of the tour. The tour also takes visitors to the museums of Club Sportsman, Club Studebaker, and Club Independiente. These stops offer different perspectives on local history and the town’s clubs.
Another destination is the private museum of Racing Club de Avellaneda. Visits are available by prior appointment. Birdwatching is also offered by prior arrangement; telescope-based astronomical observations must be scheduled in advance. If you would like to include any of these activities in your trip, confirm the current arrangements beforehand.
Memorials and local history
Villa Cañás also commemorates Mirtha Legrand: her statue stands in the Predio named after her, on Avenida 51 between Avenida 50 and Calle 48. A mural of Mirtha Legrand is located at the bus station. The two sites present the same subject in different ways—as a statue on the grounds named after her and as a mural at the station.
The Monumento al Gaucho is east of Villa Cañás, on the road leading toward Teodelina. Another historic site is the Molino Harinero de Cabody y Gutiérrez Plumer. The mill began operating in 1910 and was in operation from 1914 to 1924. After a major fire in 1924, it was called “El Molino Quemado.” These dates distinguish between the start of operations, the later period of activity, and the name given after the fire.
When choosing activities, it is especially useful to distinguish between local attractions described without special arrangements and visits that require advance planning: the lagoon offers motorboating, rowing, and sailing, while interior visits, birdwatching, and telescope observations require prior arrangements. This lets you plan your time in Villa Cañás around your interests and the conditions for each visit.
