Coronel Pringles Department: Gold, Onyx and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Coronel Pringles Department
Mining tunnels, onyx and river landscapes shape the tourism themes of Coronel Pringles Department. Options range from guided mining experiences and cycling or hiking routes to minerals, historic architecture, summer festivals and waterside recreation areas.
Mining, Trails and Mountain Landscapes
On a guided excursion to Mina Esperanza, visitors venture 300 to 400 meters into the old ore vein. They pass through tunnels and see stalactites and geological formations. Mining and rock formations are an integral part of the experience here. As schedules may change, check the current excursion itinerary before your visit.
Virorco offers points of interest for both nature lovers and cyclists: the clear-water mountain stream is home to rainbow trout, and there are routes for mountain biking and cycling. These include the 6.36-kilometer Virorco–Las Pircas loop, with an elevation gain of 170 meters. The figures describe different aspects of the same loop: its distance and elevation gain. Both are useful details when comparing routes.
The Caminito de la Zorra follows the river and offers views of the mountain landscape. The ascent to Cerro Tomolasta is considered easy to moderate and offers panoramic views of the natural surroundings. This makes a riverside trail and a panoramic ascent two different ways to experience the landscape.
At the RĂo Amarillo, you can search for gold by hand under the guidance of local residents. If you plan to take part, check its availability before your trip. The gold mine in La Carolina can be reached via Provincial Route 9.
Onyx, Museums and Historic Sites
The Cantera Santa Isabel quarry, located near Cerro Tiporco, is known as the source of green-veined onyx, which is used to make jewelry, sculptures and decorative objects. At the Fiesta del Mármol Ónix, artisans display jewelry, sculptures and decorative objects made from this material in January. Check the latest dates and program before your trip.
The Museo Parador Minero displays a collection of more than 650 minerals. These include rock crystal, onyx, amethyst, lapis lazuli, quartz and malachite; one rock crystal weighs 35 kilograms. The variety of the collection and the weight of this individual specimen offer two different glimpses into the museum’s mineral world.
The Museo de la PoesĂa houses the works of Juan CrisĂłstomo Lafinur. The Templo Santo Domingo has an onyx marble altar. The Gruta de Inti Huasi is a cave approximately 8,000 years old, associated with the AyampitĂn culture and recognized as part of San Luis’s historical and cultural heritage.
El Castillo is the former main building of an estancia, built by Bett in 1850. Its Spanish influence, small tower and ruins make it look like a medieval fortress. As a historic building, it adds a distinct architectural dimension to the area’s mineral and literary themes.
The municipality of El Trapiche has held the Fiesta de Los RĂos every summer since 1984; the festival has provincial status. The dates mentioned are also useful for planning: the Fiesta de Los RĂos takes place in summer, while artisans exhibit at the Fiesta del Mármol Ă“nix in January. Dates and programs may change.
Waterside Recreation and Regional Orientation
The municipal Balneario Monitor Fernández is located on the RĂo Rosario. It offers a natural recreation area with fishing spots for catching small fish species, and is about 3 kilometers from the center of La Toma.
A description from 2021 mentions the Chica and Grande beaches at the La Florida tourist recreation and camping complex, with lifeguards and buoy markers, as well as a launch area for boats and kayaks. Check which facilities are currently available before your visit.
