In Ayacucho Department, travel experiences range from the birdlife of Quebrada de las Higueritas and Dique Las Palmeras to churches, educational history, festivals, and crafts in several towns. The following places showcase these different facets.

Quebrada de las Higueritas: Trails and Birdlife

Quebrada de las Higueritas is located near Luján and is traversed by the river of the same name. A 2,500-meter-long trail is suitable for trekking and birdwatching; observation huts let visitors watch wildlife, especially birds, without disturbing it. The quebrada provides shelter for more than 220 bird species. Its vegetation is considered typical of a humid temperate climate. Marked trekking trails include Sendero de los Miradores and Sendero de los Abuelos. There are also two trails with interpretive signage.

A temporary closure of Reserva Natural Quebrada de las Higueritas was reported after severe storms in March 2026. Check current conditions and access before visiting.

Dique Las Palmeras and Candelaria

Three-dimensional name letters have been installed at the public beach at Dique Las Palmeras as a visual and photographic attraction. Two interactive three-dimensional maps at the beach and at Mirador de los Motoqueros show geographical attractions in the surrounding area and include QR codes for more information. A regulation published in 2026 allowed hiking, fishing, and rowing boats at the dam and along its shore; motorized boating was prohibited. Check the rules currently in effect before your visit.

The Balneario Municipal in Candelaria includes swimming pools, a campsite, quinchos, and recreation areas. The town’s history also offers a specific date: Candelaria was officially founded on July 9, 1870, when its chapel, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, was blessed. Patron saint celebrations in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria take place in the last days of January and the first days of February.

History in San Francisco del Monte de Oro

Iglesia San Francisco de Asís has written records that are more than 200 years old. It is one of the province of San Luis’s notable cultural heritage routes. A cultural trail in the southern part of San Francisco del Monte de Oro includes, among other places, Escuela Rancho. It is considered the first school founded by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, at the age of 15; its founding is dated to 1826.

Escuela Rancho has adobe walls and a roof made of straw and mud, supported by wooden beams. A simple corridor is supported by rustic tree trunks. In the Piedra Blanca area near Luján, caves and rock-shelter walls feature paintings of geometric and zoomorphic figures. They point to the former presence of Indigenous peoples.

Festivals and Crafts

In Luján, patron saint celebrations in October bring locals and visitors together for Masses, processions, music, and folk dancing. In the annual calendar, they take place considerably later than the celebrations in Candelaria, which fall in the last days of January and the beginning of February.

The Centro de Artesanos in Quines offers workshops and courses, as well as an exhibition and sales space featuring wood and stone crafts, including carvings, paintings, and textiles. Local craft practices also include working with algarrobo wood, loom weaving, hand spinning, leatherworking and braiding, and wood burning. The range of crafts brings together different materials and techniques.

Another historic landmark in Quines is La Chimenea. The structure was built in 1948 or 1949 to serve the newly established Aserradero Santa MarĂa sawmill, and it still stands. It is considered a distinctive photo spot; visitors take pictures of themselves at the structure.

A Natural Spot near Quines

El Zapallar is a natural pool in a forested mountain landscape and a starting point for a walk. It is about seven kilometers from the center of Quines. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before visiting.
