Villa Larca: Mountain Trails, Waterfalls and Rocky Landscapes
Accommodation in Villa Larca
Villa Larca lies at the foot of the Sierras de los Comechingones. The town’s adventure offerings include hiking on mountain trails, horseback riding, cycling, 4×4 excursions and climbing the surrounding mountains. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore the mountain landscape during your stay.
Nature and Trails in the Reserva Aguas Buenas
The Reserva Aguas Buenas combines rocky, water-shaped landscapes with easily accessible trails. Natural pools, waterfalls and rock formations with water holes suitable for swimming define the area. Swimming is subject to seasonal and weather-related restrictions. Check conditions before your visit.
The hiking and trekking trails vary in difficulty and connect waterfalls with viewpoints. This makes it easy to assess the trails by their different levels of difficulty. Visible tunnels and disused quarries are part of the area’s natural and historical heritage and recall its former mining activity. You should also check access conditions before visiting.
Waterfall and Stream at Chorro de San Ignacio
Chorro de San Ignacio is a 25-meter-high waterfall on a river that rises between the Sierras de los Comechingones. The waterfall lies between Papagayos and Villa Larca. From Villa Larca, take Provincial Route 1 south for three kilometers. At the end of the paved road, a 500-meter footpath heads toward the Sierras, following the stream.
Between Papagayos and Villa Larca, there is also a municipal tourist complex at the Chorro, with camping areas, parking, quinchos, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a bathing area in the stream. The facilities’ operating status may change; check before your visit.
Laguna Milagrosa lies on the stream, 400 meters upstream from Chorro de San Ignacio, and can be reached by following the stream. Along the footpath, Laguna del Deseo is a further 200 meters beyond Laguna Milagrosa. This makes the waterfall and lagoons easy to identify as successive landmarks along the watercourse.
Views and Cultural-Historical Traces
At Piedra de Luz, a circular trail leads to viewpoints overlooking Quebrada del Tala and the broad Valle de Concarán. Piedra de Luz is a rock formation that appears to balance on the mountainside. Here, the circular trail and the views are the main attractions.
Cueva del Indio is a natural cave in a large rock. What are believed to be the remains of a member of the Indigenous Comechingones people were found there; the attribution remains tentative. Alongside its rock formations and waterways, Villa Larca also has its own cultural-historical connection.
The area’s natural attractions can be distinguished by their main features: at the Reserva Aguas Buenas, water holes, trails and traces of mining come together. At the Chorro, the visit centers on the waterfall, stream and nearby lagoons. At Piedra de Luz, the circular trail leads to the named viewpoints.
