Coastal landscapes, water sports and wildlife watching give San Antonio Department a range of travel highlights. There is also a museum in San Antonio Oeste, local events and coastal cuisine that puts fish and seafood center stage. You can weigh up which places and experiences will shape your stay according to your interests.

Coast and Marine Reserve

On the coast of the San Matías Gulf, Las Grutas is part of the Área Natural Protegida Bahía de San Antonio protected area. Bahía de San Antonio is a coastal marine reserve at the northwestern end of the gulf and has been part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network since August 1993. Dolphins and sea lions are among its wildlife. The bay is also used by 17 species of migratory shorebirds and nine other species that nest and breed in the Arctic Circle.

The beach destinations also each have their own appeal. Playas Doradas has a three-kilometer-long beach with fine sand and a gentle slope. The sand was formed by the erosion of quartz and silicon dioxide and is considered unique in the country. Kitesurfing, sandboarding, diving and fishing add to the beach scenery. Near Las Grutas lies Punta Perdices, an excursion destination known for its crystal-clear water and also called the “Caribbean of Patagonia.” Conditions for accessing the beach may vary.

Water Sports and Wildlife Watching

San Antonio Oeste offers windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing and freediving. In Las Grutas, a platform in front of the third beach access provides access to a submerged rock formation used for traditional introductory dives. The depth there is three to six meters. With its other water sports and fishing opportunities, Playas Doradas offers a different range of activities.

In San Antonio Este, possible experiences include coastal fishing, walks and boat trips to observe marine wildlife, including southern right whales and sea lions. The distinctive shell-covered coast lies on a dune base, and the beaches are described as white. Boat trips to observe marine wildlife operate year-round. The whale-watching season runs from mid-August to October. On these trips, you may spot seabirds, sea lions and dolphins, and occasionally orcas. Check the dates before your trip, especially if you plan to time your visit around whale watching.

Another seasonal date to keep in mind is the Fiesta Nacional de Playas Doradas, held each year around mid-February. Check the exact event dates before your trip. A visit timed around the festival and a trip during whale-watching season therefore differ considerably in timing.

Museum, Events and Cuisine

In San Antonio Oeste, the Museo Jacobacci is housed in the historic home where engineer Guido Jacobacci lived. It is home to a natural science and anthropology museum of the Patagonian coast. The halls are intended to house exhibits on geology, paleontology, marine biology, archaeology and local ethnography. The museum thus complements coastal experiences with themes from natural and cultural history.

In restaurants in Las Grutas, San Antonio Oeste and San Antonio Este, fish and seafood are typical coastal dishes. For getting oriented locally, the municipal Las Grutas app provides maps of the three urban centers, tide tables, and information on attractions, activities and cultural events. Check the app’s current availability and features before your trip.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up different priorities: San Antonio Oeste offers water sports and the Museo Jacobacci; Las Grutas combines its coastal setting and marine reserve with access to traditional introductory dives; and Playas Doradas is known for its long beach and other water sports. San Antonio Este adds coastal fishing, walks and boat trips to the options. This lets you choose a location based on the experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.
