Avellaneda Department reveals itself through a wide range of themes: agriculture along the Río Negro, fossils and railway history, literary heritage, wine and seasonal festivals. Lamarque, Darwin, Luis Beltrán, Chimpay and Pomona each have their own distinctive character. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these interests and the dates of events can help guide your planning.

Riverside landscapes and local character

Lamarque is an agricultural oasis irrigated with water from the Río Negro. In this area, the river forms a group of islands. The Río Negro is also used for recreation along its entire course, including at swimming spots and for activities and water sports. Lamarque’s agricultural character and the leisure opportunities along the river thus offer two different ways to experience the landscape.

Pomona offers further natural attractions, with its river, parks and gardens. For finding your way around Lamarque, the town’s location on Provincial Route No. 250 and its comprehensive range of services are also relevant. The destination thus combines river and landscape themes with the distinctive character of individual towns.

Fossils, railways and literature

The “Héctor Cabaza” Paleontological Museum in Lamarque displays a replica of the globally unique Tuarangesaurus Cabazai fossil. The original fossil was found in fields near Lamarque. The municipal Paleontological Museum’s collection also includes unique fossil species, many of which were discovered in the Bajo de Santa Rosa area. The finds and the replica on display give paleontology a clear connection to the surrounding area.

The Railway Museum in Darwin preserves the history of trains in the Río Negro’s Valle Medio. Exhibits include vehicles used to transport railway workers between stations, English lanterns and tools belonging to the Material Remolcado Department’s maintenance crew. The collection also includes train conductors’ uniforms and items from the railway doctor’s office. It therefore ranges from railway work to objects from everyday operations.

In Lamarque, the Casa Natal de Rodolfo Walsh is the house where the writer was born. It is located on an estancia and surrounded by orchards, woods and extensive, scenic fields. Its biographical connection and rural setting together shape the character of the place.

Places of remembrance and events

The Santuario y Parque Ceferiniano in Chimpay commemorates Blessed Ceferino. Chimpay’s municipal council established the site in 1967 through Resolution Act No. 433; it covers approximately four hectares. The Semana Ceferiniana is also held annually in Chimpay in August. It begins with a Mass that is repeated for seven days.

The Fiesta Nacional del Tomate y la Producción is held annually in Lamarque in March. The program includes music festivals and a so-called “tomatina”; there are also fruit-packing competitions. Another event is the Fiesta de los Canales de Riego: its 14th edition in February 2026 included inflatable raft races, kayaking and the educational tourist tour “Camino del Agua.”

The Regata del Río Negro offers another point of comparison in terms of timing and theme: the canoe marathon is 300 kilometers long, lasts seven days and takes place annually in the first days of January. The route also passes through Choele Choel and Luis Beltrán. Together with the Fiesta Nacional del Tomate in March and the Semana Ceferiniana in August, this provides different recurring times of year to visit; the Fiesta de los Canales is included here as the specifically documented February 2026 edition.

Wine experiences in Luis Beltrán

The Caminos del Vino include Luis Beltrán and bring together wineries that offer visitor experiences. At Bodega Videla Dorna, these include a guided tour of the winery grounds, ending with a country-style asado. If you are planning a particular wine experience, check the offerings of the winery in advance.

Bodega de los Salesianos in Luis Beltrán is also closely connected to the town: according to a report dated September 3, 2026, it was unanimously recognized as a provincial historic monument. Wine and cultural heritage thus complement the themes that shape a trip through Avellaneda Department.
