Apóstoles is the national capital of yerba mate and is known as the “provincial capital of Holy Week and Pesanké.” If you’re looking for a hotel in Apóstoles, these distinct cultural themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip. Nature spots and the Balneario Municipal Chimiray also offer more ideas for planning your stay.

Cultural Themes Around Yerba Mate

In front of Casa del Mate stands a mate sculpture more than two meters tall. It depicts the traditional Guaraní process of producing yerba mate. Casa del Mate is at the end of the second plaza on Avenida Sarmiento and Calle Alvear; its entrance faces Plaza Gral. San Martín. At this location, the theme of yerba mate is brought together with a specific portrayal of the production process.

The Monumento al Pesanké, at the entrance to the city, offers a different cultural perspective. Inaugurated in 2018, this work by Sergio Brua honors European pioneers and embodies the ancient symbol of the decorated egg. Together, the two representations showcase distinct themes: the production of yerba mate in one, and Pesanké and the memory of European pioneers in the other.

The Fiesta Nacional de la Yerba Mate is also part of the city’s cultural calendar and takes place in Apóstoles every year. Exact dates and the program vary. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the information for the relevant date in advance.

Holy Week, Pesanké and Local Heritage

The Recorrido de las 7 Iglesias takes visitors to churches of both the Latin and Byzantine Ukrainian rites. A special Holy Week tradition is the display of the Santa Sábana (Plashchanétsia) at Iglesia Santísima Trinidad, which also follows the Byzantine Ukrainian rite. The display takes place during Holy Week; check the dates and access arrangements before planning a trip around it.

Learn about the famous figures buried in Cementerio de Apóstoles. Another connection to Holy Week dates to late March 2024, when José Kura created several walls depicting the Stations of the Cross in Reserva Tupambaé as part of the activities planned for Holy Week in Apóstoles. The year refers to when these works were created.

Nature Spots and Outdoor Activities

The six-hectare Reserva Tupambaé is home to a wide variety of botanical species and typical local fauna. Marked walking trails offer a way to experience the area’s natural environment, and the reserve also features mythological sculptures. It combines walks with botanical and cultural experiences.

Reserva Tupambaé is also home to an information center offering regional food products and various yerba mate brands. In winter, it is open to visitors on weekends from 2 to 6 p.m. As opening hours may change with the season, check them before your visit.

A long path in Parque Centenario runs around an artificial lake. In an area protected by the Apóstoles municipal government, visitors can observe birds, ducks and a caiman; the presence of individual animals may vary. While the reserve features marked trails and botanical species, the focus here is the lakeside path and wildlife watching.

Balneario Municipal Chimiray offers opportunities for day trips and camping. Direct access to the stream invites you to cool off and enjoy the natural surroundings. Check seasonal conditions before your trip.
