Alta Gracia: Jesuit Estancia and Culture
Accommodation in Alta Gracia
Alta Gracia offers several points of interest for a stay: the history of the Jesuit estancia, museums with a range of historical and cultural themes, and the Arroyo Chicamtoltina. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in architectural heritage, individual life stories, or the landscape.
Jesuit Heritage and Historic Water Engineering
The Estancia Jesuítica de Alta Gracia dates back to 1643. It is located in the historic center and is one of the five Jesuit estancias in Córdoba recognized as UNESCO World Heritage. Its residence houses the Museo Nacional Estancia Jesuítica de Alta Gracia y Casa del Virrey Liniers. The site thus brings together the history of the estancia and a museum in its historic building complex.
The Tajamar is also part of this historical context. Built by the Jesuits in 1659, it is considered the oldest artificial dam in Córdoba Province. A Tajamar planned by Juan Krauss near the estancia was supplied by irrigation channels. Its water provided hydraulic power for two grain mills and a fulling mill, and was also used to irrigate orchards and gardens. These functions show how the complex used water both to power its operations and to cultivate the land.
Museums and Personal Stories
Villa Nydia tells a more recent story connected to the Guevara family. The city government designated the building as cultural heritage, acquired it in November 2000, and opened the Museo Casa Ernesto Che Guevara there on July 14, 2001. Photographs in the museum show the different homes where the Guevara De la Serna family lived during their stay in Alta Gracia from 1932 to 1943.
Another cultural site is La Peña. From 1932, it was the home of Gabriel Dubois and his family; Dubois also established Alta Gracia’s first sculpture art studio there. The Museo Manuel de Falla focuses on another artistic biography. It is housed in the Chalet Los Espinillos, where Manuel de Falla spent the final phase of his life. Held in November, the Mes Aniversario de Falla honors him with concerts, theater, film screenings, and other gatherings. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal has its own focus. It displays materials from the period before the Spanish conquest in parts of the Sierras Centrales, as well as from the first contacts between the Spanish and Indigenous peoples. Its collection tells the story of the Indigenous peoples of the surrounding area; education is one of the museum’s central aims.
Arroyo Chicamtoltina and Events
The Arroyo Chicamtoltina runs through Alta Gracia from northwest to southeast. Its landscape is characterized by clear, calm water and surroundings shaped by dense, shady trees. You can walk along its banks. This offers a scenic contrast to the museums and historic buildings, without reducing the stream to its role as a waterway.
In addition to its historical significance, the Tajamar is also a place for recreation today: it is considered a meeting place for families and a place to unwind. The traditional food festival Peperina, held during Holy Week, offers a different kind of group activity, with cooking classes for all ages. These two themes highlight different sides of the town: historic water management and public recreation on the one hand, and regional cuisine and cooking together on the other.
