History and Culture in Alta Gracia

The Jesuit Estancia of Alta Gracia dates back to 1643, when Alonso Nieto de Herrera donated lands at the foot of the Achala Mountains to the Society of Jesus. Jesuit architects Juan Bautista Primoli and Andrés Blanqui contributed to the design of the church, giving it a late Italian Baroque style. The estancia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The residence of the estancia houses the Museo Nacional Estancia Jesuítica de Alta Gracia y Casa del Virrey Liniers.

Other buildings also tell the story of the area. Alta Gracia is home to the oldest artificial dam in Córdoba Province, built by the Jesuits in 1659. The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced stands opposite the main square. The Gruta de la Virgen de Lourdes is a religious site surrounded by nature. It is located three kilometers from the center of Alta Gracia and was built between 1915 and 1916 as a replica of a grotto in France.

The museums cover a range of subjects. Villa Nydia opened as the Museo Casa Ernesto Che Guevara on July 14, 2001. The Museo Casa Ernesto Che Guevara displays photographs of various houses where the Guevara de la Serna family lived during their stay in Alta Gracia from 1932 to 1943. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal explores the pre-Spanish conquest period in parts of the Sierras Centrales region, as well as the first encounters between Spaniards and Indigenous peoples.

The Museo de la Ciudad collection began with objects relating to the history of the area, which residents of Alta Gracia donated to the city government. Visitors can see them once a year. At Arroyo Chicamtoltina, the landscape reveals a peaceful side of the area: the stream flows through Alta Gracia from northwest to southeast, carrying clear, calm water. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of nature in the shade of leafy trees.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Parque García Lorca offers green spaces for picnics and games. Lago El Tajamar and the Reloj Público provide an iconic setting for outdoor family recreation. Parque Infantil Maestro Butori has soccer fields, a swimming pool, a walking path, and play equipment designed especially for children.

Alta Gracia also has two golf courses. Cycling is one way to explore the city and its surroundings. Another sporting attraction is the BMX track, which hosts the Córdoba provincial BMX championship, organized and supervised by the Asociación Cordobesa de BMX.

Outdoor activities in the Paravachasca tourist region include hiking, horseback riding, and guided excursions. This makes it easy to distinguish between the locations: cycling is a good way to explore Alta Gracia and its surroundings, while hiking, horseback riding, and guided excursions are activities in Paravachasca.
