If you are looking for hotels, you can first decide what you want to do on your trip: would you mainly like to visit museums and cultural sites, or include river landscapes and seasonal swimming spots?

Art, Railways and Regional History

The Museo de Bellas Artes in Río Cuarto houses more than 1,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures and objects by Antonio Berni, Benito Quinquela Martín and local artists. The collection is shown in permanent and temporary exhibitions. The Museo del Riel is located in part of the former railway station. Its permanent, technology-focused exhibition is dedicated to railway communications and more than 120 years of the country’s communications history. The two museums have distinct focuses: art collections and the history of technology.

The Museo Histórico Regional presents its subjects in five rooms. The tour covers Indigenous peoples in southwest Córdoba, colonization and the founding of the city of Río Cuarto, the frontier command and the Desert Campaign, immigration, and life in the city and countryside. Héctor Otegui and temporary exhibitions are also part of the museum’s offerings. The building was declared a national historic monument in 1975 and has housed the museum since its founding in 1981.

Nearby, the history of C.C. El Andino also tells of the transformation of a railway station building: it was built in 1875, and train services there ended in the 1990s. After a period of deterioration, the building was restored and opened as a cultural center on November 13, 1995. The Teatro Municipal, closely connected to the city’s memory, was completed in 1908 and inaugurated on Thursday evening, September 9, 1909. Casa de la Poesía was converted into a museum that can host a range of artistic and cultural activities.

Parks and Cultural Offerings

Parque Sarmiento offers visitor routes such as Paseo del Parque and Paseo del Lago. The city amphitheater hosts artistic, sporting and cultural events. The park also has a large children’s playground, a small railway, boats for children and Plaza de la Amistad. At Parque del Sur, Sala Cultural del Sur: Estación Infancias offers music, dance, puppetry, circus and games; there is also a traditional carousel.

At Parque Ecológico Urbano, educational trails combine encounters with wild and farm animals with insights into native flora. The park’s surroundings are described as peaceful and well maintained. The green spaces thus have different focuses: trails and other facilities at Parque Sarmiento, cultural offerings at Parque del Sur and nature at Parque Ecológico Urbano.

Rivers, Swimming Spots and Historic Sites Nearby

Balneario de Alpa Corral on the Río Las Barrancas is used seasonally. It has a deep swimming area, a shallower beach section, barbecue grills, sun umbrellas, tables, benches and a snack stand. The Río Las Barrancas begins in the Unión de los Ríos area, where the El Talita and Las Moras rivers converge. The El Puente Colgante suspension bridge in Alpa Corral was inaugurated in 1979 and makes it easier for vehicles and pedestrians to cross. Museo Alpa Corral presents the history and archaeology of the area.

For summer swimming outings, Achiras’s destinations include the municipal Balneario, La Ollita, and the Los Coquitos and Achiras streams. La Ollita is more natural and quieter; the streams are suitable for family outings. The municipal Balneario is one of Achiras’s main summer attractions, with fine-sand beach areas, waterfalls and rock pools, as well as barbecue grills and other facilities. Museo del Desierto in Achiras has three halls and a cultural space, presenting the gaucho tradition, the life of the Comechingones and the town’s mixed identity.

The crystal-clear Río Piedras Blancas runs through Las Albahacas. There, it has calm waters, sandy beaches and a waterfall; the municipal Balneario and Baño de los Dioses are located along the river. The swimming spots and riverbanks are suitable for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. Three kilometers from Las Albahacas is the hamlet of El Chacay, with Las Colesitas, which has eight natural pools and waterfalls. Nearby, Villa Jorcoricó has an exceptionally clear, very quiet river with natural swimming pools.

The history of Posta de Los Nogales also has a distinct connection to the region: the former post station on the Camino Real is five kilometers from the town of Achiras. General José de San Martín passed through there on his way to the Cuyo region.
