Necochea – Discover Nature, River and Coast
Accommodation in Necochea
Necochea brings together urban areas, parkland, a river and the coast. If you’re looking for a hotel in Necochea, you can plan your stay around whether nature, riverside areas, water sports or culture are your priority. Destinations include places in the city as well as excursions in the nearby and wider region.
Parkland and birdwatching
Parque Miguel Lillo covers 640 hectares within the city of Necochea and has more than a million trees, mostly conifers. They provide shelter for the region’s birds. The park’s wooded area has internal trails, an aerobic fitness circuit, and French, Japanese and rock gardens. The trails and gardens offer different ways to explore, without requiring a specific route.
Lago de los Cisnes is an artificial lake bordered by the beach and Parque Miguel Lillo. Various waterbird species can be spotted there. Horseback rides are also offered in the park; the rental facility is at Avenida 10 and Calle 117. Horseback riding is available seasonally, so check in advance when it is offered.
Meeting places and trails along the Río Quequén
The Rambla Municipal on Calle 83 has been an emblematic meeting place since it was built in 1910. The Paseo de la Ribera offers a different way to explore the river: it runs along the Río Quequén from its starting point at Calle 66 to Puente Taraborelli. Along this promenade are river viewpoints, play and rest areas, fishing spots, a refreshment service, restrooms, barbecue areas and play facilities for children. The two places therefore have different focuses: the Rambla is known as a meeting place, while the Paseo connects a defined riverside route with various visitor areas.
History and museum visits
The Museo Histórico Regional “Egisto Ratti” is dedicated to the history of the Partido de Necochea. Various themed rooms and temporary exhibitions offer different ways to explore it. You can visit from March to December: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Check the schedule before your visit.
Coastal spots and water sports
Near Necochea, Paraje Las Cascadas is located on the Río Quequén, about 12 kilometers from the city. Natural pools and cascades define the area, where you can go kayaking, canoeing, rafting and rowing. In the city, Escollera Sur is a surf spot with point-break waves over a sandy bottom that can reach up to three meters. The two locations offer different water experiences: waves on the coast in one, pools and cascades on the river in the other.
Playa Punta Negra is 16 kilometers southwest of the city center. There, rock formations descend from the cliffs into the sea. Natural pools provide a habitat for fish, mollusks and marine plants. Punta Negra is therefore distinct from both the surf zone at Escollera Sur and the river area at Las Cascadas: here, rock formations and natural pools shape the coastal landscape.
More to explore in the Necochea Partido
Further afield in the Necochea region is Reserva Natural Arroyo Zabala. The nature reserve covers 2,800 hectares on both sides of Necochea and San Cayetano, at the mouth of the stream of the same name. Transitional coastal dunes and ecosystems adapted to the exchange of fresh and salt water characterize the area. In the wider destination of Necochea Partido, the reserve is designated as a provincial natural reserve in the “Multiple Use” category. It preserves representative coastal flora and fauna, including capybaras and sea lions.
Puente Colgante “Presidente Hipólito Yrigoyen” is also part of the wider Necochea Partido region. It is a National Historic Monument and was officially inaugurated on July 21, 1929. The suspension bridge connects Necochea and Quequén across the Río Quequén Grande. In the Partido de Necochea, rivers, the sea and lagoons also provide a diverse selection of waters where you can enjoy a variety of fishing year-round.
