Lagoon, Water System and Nature

The Laguna de Monte covers an area of 686 hectares and has a maximum depth of 2.30 metres. It belongs to a connected group of lagoons and streams known as the Lagunas Encadenadas de Monte. The Arroyo Totoral flows into it, and the Laguna de las Perdices is its outflow. If you are comparing routes by length, the complete circuit around the Laguna de Monte is about 10.6 kilometres. This distance refers to the entire loop and offers a practical guide for planning a walk.

In the Monte destination, Garza Blanca, Garza NĂvea and Garza Mora are found in the vegetation near the Laguna de Monte and the Arroyo Totoral. Capybara populations are also part of the Monte area and are distributed across the interconnected lagoons. The smallest population is in the Laguna de Monte; its small size is linked to high levels of human activity. These bird species and capybaras offer another perspective on nature in the Monte destination.

Architectural History and Cultural Heritage

The Templo Parroquial San Miguel Arcángel was inaugurated in 1867 and declared a National Historic Monument. Its construction history dates back to 1863. The church was built at three different locations before being established at its present site in the town centre. The years mark different stages: 1863 is the start of its recorded construction history, while 1867 is the year of its inauguration. The Parroquia has an eclectic colonial design. Inside is a main altarpiece depicting the Resurrection of Christ.

The Rancho de Rosas was built in 1817 at Estancia Los Cerrillos. It is the only surviving residential building in the country built using this construction system. In 1987, the ranch was moved from Estancia Los Cerrillos to the town of Monte, to the corner of Belgrano and Soler. Its construction date, original location and later relocation make its history a distinct topic alongside the history of the church.

Arches and structural remains were found at the archaeological site of Escuela NÂş 16. They are thought to belong to the foundations of important buildings and/or passageways dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. Hiding weapons or food is cited as a possible use. This interpretation remains speculative; at the same time, these archaeological traces are clearly distinct from the surviving buildings in the town.

Cultural Heritage and Festival in Monte

Cristo de la Esperanza is part of Monte’s cultural heritage. The sculpture was installed on the southern shore of the Laguna de Monte in April 2010. The artist and sculptor Pablo Bagnat carved the 2.10-metre-tall figure from ash wood using a chainsaw. The cross is made of quebracho wood and is 7 metres tall.

For the Partido de Monte, the Fiesta de la Comida al Disco is scheduled annually from 1 March to 30 April. The event in San Miguel Del Monte brings together more than 50 stalls offering different dishes prepared on a plough disc. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for each edition: the annual period is set, while details of individual editions may vary.
