Zapiola offers a historical and architectural focus for your stay. Its settlement history stretches from its original name, General Zapiola, to details about the store and the subdivision near the railway station; old houses and the Capilla Inmaculada Concepción add to the picture. You can explore the town center on foot or by bicycle.

Local History Around the Railway Station

The settlement was initially called General Zapiola and later simply Zapiola. Its current name honors the military figure José Matías Deogracias Zapiola, a hero of independence. In 1884, Lorenzo Cavallero’s general store was established opposite the Zapiola railway station. The 1913 subdivision opposite the station comprised five blocks; one of them contained an old general store. The town’s name, commerce and settlement structure thus offer different ways of looking at Zapiola’s past.

Houses and Religious Architectural History

Zapiola’s old houses date from the mid-19th century and preserve architectural details that reflect the town’s history. The Capilla Inmaculada Concepción in Zapiola is considered the oldest religious building in the Partido de Lobos. The architectural interest therefore ranges from details of individual houses to the religious history of the partido.

Getting Around the Town Center

You can explore on foot or by bicycle. As of July 27, 2026, visitors were picnicking at Plaza Democracia Argentina with local products they had brought along. Opposite the railway station is a pulpería, with two disused fuel pumps still standing on its sidewalk. As of July 27, 2026, the Bodegón El Rancho de Zapiola’s culinary offerings included grilled meats, pasta and regional dishes. Check current opening hours before planning a visit.

Lobos: Nature and Regional Connections

Two railway branches run through the Partido de Lobos: the Sarmiento and Roca lines. If you plan to travel by train, check current connections and timetables in advance.

The Laguna de Lobos is located in the Partido de Lobos. This natural wetland covers 800 hectares and is a reservoir for native flora and fauna. Its vegetation-rich surroundings are home to a wide variety of wild birds. Due to its salinity and water-level characteristics, the Laguna is listed as a Latin American wetland; these features create a habitat for great biodiversity. The lagoon is suitable for water sports and other aquatic activities. Commercial fishing there was discontinued in the early 1940s, and sport fishing was introduced as an activity. At an event held at the Laguna in 2018, the program included sailboats, kayaking, canoeing, rowing and kayak fishing.
