Chascomús brings together historical heritage, cultural attractions and activities at Laguna de Chascomús. Many of the attractions and offerings featured here relate to the city of Chascomús. When planning your trip, you might consider whether you’d rather visit historic sites and museums or set aside time for exercise and water sports.

Lagoon and outdoor activities

Laguna de Chascomús covers 3,000 hectares. It is one of the most important bodies of water in Buenos Aires Province and the largest body of water in the system in question. The Camino de Circunvalación de la Laguna is a 31-kilometer route. There are circuits for cycling, running and walking along the lagoon shore and in nearby parks.

Kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing are available on the lagoon. Local providers rent equipment, offer private lessons and organize guided outings. Regattas are also held throughout the year. Check the availability of water sports and regatta dates for your travel dates. This will help you plan around seasonal offerings and activities.

Historic sites and architecture

Plaza Independencia is considered the founding site of Chascomús and is a historic place surrounding the former fort. The Mausoleo de los Caídos en la Batalla de Chascomús is a National Historic Monument. It honors the combatants who fell on November 7, 1839. The Capilla de los Negros was founded in 1862 by the Nueva Hermandad de Morenos Bayonbé de Invenza as a gathering place for the Afro-Chascomús community, for spiritual celebrations and the preservation of its culture.

The buildings also display a variety of features. Casa de Casco was built in 1831 and is an example of a period “casa de alto” house. Its features include adobe and brick walls up to 70 centimeters thick, a folding staircase and hardwood grilles. Chascomús Municipal Palace was inaugurated in 1940 in a distinctive Neocolonial style within the Art Deco body of work used by Francisco Salamone.
