Rivers, the sea and lagoons shape Necochea Partido, along with diverse coastal landscapes, historic sites and museums. Partido de Necochea offers a variety of fishing opportunities all year round. You can therefore tailor your trip to focus on nature, water sports or history.

Nature and Waterscapes

Between Partido de Necochea and Partido de San Cayetano lies Reserva Natural Arroyo Zabala, a provincial reserve in the “Multiple Use” category. It protects representative coastal flora and fauna; animals found there include capybaras and sea lions. The nature reserve offers a distinct perspective on coastal conservation alongside the waters of the partido.

Necochea’s coastline is also a defining feature of the area: Necochea has a 64-kilometre-long coastline. By the sea, where the urban area of Necochea ends, lies Parque Eólico “Vientos de Necochea”. The wind farm covers 158 hectares and has eleven Vestas wind turbines.

Beaches and Coastal Landforms

The beaches of Quequén are characterized by significant erosion and narrower stretches of shoreline with coarser sand. Seashells, snail shells and rock formations also shape the coastal landscape. Visitors can also swim and enjoy water sports such as surfing, bodyboarding and kayaking.

At Balneario Los Ángeles, wide beaches with coarse sand alternate with cliffs and rock platforms that extend up to 200 metres out to sea. The cave known as Cueva del Tigre is also located there. Las Grutas stands out for its cliffs with numerous hollows; seashells and snail shells lie on the sand. At Playa Punta Negra, rocks form natural pools that provide a habitat for fish, molluscs and marine plants.

The coastal destinations each have their own distinctive features: Quequén is known for its narrower beaches, coarser sand and water sports; Los Ángeles for its rock platforms extending far out to sea; and Las Grutas for its cliffs with hollows. At Playa Punta Negra, meanwhile, natural pools shape the coastal landscape.

Activities in Parque Miguel Lillo

Bicycles and horses are available to rent in Parque Miguel Lillo, and you can also ride the eco-train there. At the heart of the park is Sendero de Hongos, an approximately 500-metre-long educational nature trail that is open to the public. Its approximate length and educational purpose set it apart from the park’s recreational activities.

Along Río Quequén, Paseo de la Ribera runs from its starting point at Calle 66 to Puente Taraborelli. This stretch of path follows the river and connects two named points: the start at Calle 66 and Puente Taraborelli. The rivers, sea and lagoons also provide the basis for Partido de Necochea’s year-round fishing opportunities.

Bridges, History and Museums

Puente Colgante “Presidente Hipólito Yrigoyen” connects Necochea and Quequén across Río Quequén Grande. It was officially inaugurated on 21 July 1929 and has been a National Historic Monument since 2017. The name of a distinctive beach in Quequén and a well-known surf centre also has maritime roots: both were named after the wreck of the Montepasubio.

Quequén is also home to Monumento a la Gesta de Malvinas. The work by sculptor Andrés Mirward was inaugurated on 9 October 1999 and is 35.70 metres high. In Necochea, Plaza Dardo Rocha is a defining feature of the historic city centre. Together, the bridge, monument and plaza offer different ways to explore the history of the two towns.

Museo Histórico Regional “Egisto Ratti” is dedicated to the history of Partido de Necochea. Its themed galleries and temporary exhibitions provide the setting. Parque Miguel Lillo in the municipality of Necochea is also home to Museo de Ciencias Naturales “Rodolfo Faggioli”. Its galleries cover marine biology, palaeontology, megafauna and local birds.
