Rwanda offers several clearly distinct highlights to consider when planning a trip: montane rainforest, savanna and wetland landscapes, traditional architecture, and coffee growing. Nyungwe National Park combines wildlife and plant life with hiking and birdwatching; Akagera offers a different kind of landscape and a boat trip on Lake Ihema. There are also kayaking tours on Lake Kivu and visits to coffee cooperatives and washing stations, which are concentrated mainly around Gisenyi near the lake. When looking for a hotel for your trip, it helps to first decide which experiences matter most to you.

Nyungwe: Rainforest, Species and Trails

A total of 13 primate species, more than 1,000 plant species, over 90 mammal species, and 300 bird species have been recorded in Nyungwe National Park. Many are endemic and found only there. Species counts may change as inventories are updated. For nature enthusiasts, both the diversity and the distinctiveness of the species recorded here are key attractions.

The elevated Canopy Walkway offers views over the montane rainforest canopy and starts at the Uwinka Visitor Centre. The hiking trails also have two designated starting points: ten begin at the Uwinka Visitor Centre and three at Gisakura Campsite. These starting points help you plan hikes in the park; check current access to the trails and Canopy Walkway before your trip.

The park offers several different wildlife-viewing opportunities. Visitors can seek out three semi-wild chimpanzee communities: Cyamudongo, Mayebe, and Gisovu. Birdwatching is offered with expert park guides. From the Uwinka Visitor Centre, visitors can also seek out a group of more than 400 Angolan colobus monkeys; the group size may vary. Check in advance on availability and booking requirements for the chimpanzee activity, as well as current birdwatching arrangements.

The Cyinzobe Hike is designed as a multi-day trek: it takes three days, includes meals, and passes through rainforest, by the Kamiranzovu Swamp, and along streams and waterfalls. Overnight stays are in wooden cabins along the route. These details give you a concrete idea of what the tour involves; check current booking and route arrangements before your trip.

Akagera: Savannas, Lakes and Papyrus

Akagera covers just over 1,000 square kilometers. Its landscape ranges from lakes fringed with forest and papyrus swamps to savanna plains and rolling highlands. In contrast to Nyungwe’s montane rainforest, different types of landscape shape the experience here. A boat trip on Lake Ihema in the south of the park offers the chance to see hippos, Nile crocodiles, and numerous birds on the lake’s central island. The trip on the water thus offers a view of the lake’s wildlife.

King’s Palace: Residence and Inyambo Cattle

The King’s Palace is a reconstruction of a traditional royal residence: a thatched, beehive-shaped building. Behind the palace live several long-horned Inyambo cattle, descended from the king’s herd. Their keepers care for and sing to the animals. The architecture and the cattle care described here together offer a specific cultural theme alongside Rwanda’s nature experiences.

Lake Kivu, the Congo Nile Trail and Coffee

Kayaking tours are offered on Lake Kivu. Check current tour operators and availability when planning. Another way to tailor your trip to your preferred mode of travel is the Congo Nile Trail: the route runs from Rubavu to Rusizi and takes approximately five days by bicycle or around ten days on foot. Individual sections are also possible. The approximate durations therefore vary by mode of travel; check current trail conditions before your trip.

Coffee is grown throughout the country: around 450,000 smallholder farmers grow coffee in Rwanda. Visits to cooperatives and washing stations are concentrated mainly around Gisenyi near Lake Kivu. Some of these facilities offer year-round tours of the coffee-making process. This allows you to connect coffee growing across the country with a firsthand look at processing; confirm current visiting options when planning.
