Ethiopia can be explored through its very different landscapes and cultural sites. In the Konso Cultural Landscape, extensive dry-stone terraces shape the scenery: they protect the soil from erosion, retain water and form cultivated agricultural terraces. Here, the landscape and its use are closely intertwined; the terraces are both a distinctive landscape feature and part of agriculture.

Terraces, High Mountains and Forests

The Gedeo Cultural Landscape also shows how cultivation and landscape work together. Mature trees provide shade for enset, coffee and other food crops. Dense groups of megalithic monuments line the ridges. The Gedeo people revere them, and their elders care for them. In Gedeo, therefore, an agricultural landscape sits alongside a culturally significant collection of monuments.

Bale Mountains National Park encompasses Africa’s largest area of afro-alpine habitats above 3,000 metres. This high-mountain landscape also includes numerous glacial lakes, wetlands and moorlands. On the southern slopes of the Bale Mountains, the landscape gives way to Harenna Forest, Ethiopia’s second-largest moist tropical forest. It also includes areas of cloud forest. These different landscape types give the Bale area a character distinct from the terraced fields of Konso and Gedeo.

In Simien National Park, rugged mountain peaks, deep valleys and steep escarpments define the terrain. The escarpments have elevation differences of around 1,500 metres. Wildlife is also part of the park’s character: Walia ibex, gelada baboons and Ethiopian wolves live there. For a thematic overview, Simien can thus be identified by its striking mountain formations and the animal species mentioned, while Bale is characterised by afro-alpine habitats, wetlands and Harenna Forest.

Churches, Stelae and Historic Architecture

The cultural sites described include the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Biete Medhani Alem has five aisles and is considered the largest monolithic church in the world. Biete Ghiorgis stands out for a different architectural feature: the church has a cruciform floor plan. The two details highlight different aspects—its size and five aisles in one case, its floor plan in the other. Lalibela can therefore also be explored through specific architectural features.

The collection of monuments at Tiya comprises 36 monuments, including 32 carved stelae covered with symbols. The figures distinguish the total collection from the larger group of stelae bearing symbols; they do not mean that all 36 monuments are stelae described in the same way. Melka Kunture and Balchit preserve archaeological and palaeontological evidence. They bear witness to the area’s settlement by hominin groups two million years ago. Tiya and Melka Kunture with Balchit thus offer different archaeological perspectives: monumental stelae on the one hand, and evidence of very early settlement on the other.

Harar Jugol combines historic fortifications with different forms of traditional residential architecture. The walls were built between the 13th and 16th centuries. The architectural heritage includes traditional, Indian and combined townhouses with distinctive interiors. The different house types and their interiors complement the history of the city walls with an architectural perspective on the cityscape.

Choose the Focus of Your Trip

When looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first decide which side of Ethiopia you want to focus on: terraces and cultivated crops, mountain landscapes and wildlife, archaeological evidence, church architecture or historic urban buildings. The examples differ both in subject and in character. This way, your choice of hotel remains connected to the landscape or cultural heritage you want to shape your trip.
