Ilovlinskiy District: Chalk Landscapes and Cossack Culture
Accommodation in Ilovlinskiy District
In Ilovlinskiy District, the landscapes of Donskoy Nature Park and the history of the Don Cossacks offer different reasons to plan a trip. Nature trails, excursions and cultural themes are easy to distinguish: routes differ, for example, in how you travel and how long they take, while the museum and historic sites offer their own insights into regional history.
Chalk mountains, rivers and trails in Donskoy Nature Park
Donskoy Nature Park includes the Don and Ilovlya rivers, large chalk mountains with deep, ravine-like erosion gullies, floodplain meadows, and floodplain and upland forests. Other landscape features include extensive areas of tulips, feather grass, fescue and other rare plants. Sacred springs and the former shrine of a fire-worship site are also among the park’s distinctive features. River scenery, chalk formations and plant life thus offer quite different ways to enjoy nature.
The nature park offers hikes on tourist routes and eco-trails, trips by car and bicycle, horseback rides, and kayak trips on the Don and Ilovlya. Those who want to explore the area on a set route can compare two differently designed tours. The 50-kilometre “Water and Stone” route in Donskoy Nature Park takes seven hours and combines travel by car and on foot to the Ventsy uplands, the Ognevishche shrine, Kachalinsky Spring, Red Mountain and Filimonovsky Spring.
The “Cossack Freedom” route is also 50 kilometres long, but takes six hours and combines travel by car and horseback with sightseeing. Stops include the horse-breeding farm of A. V. Yegorov’s peasant farm, an Australian ostrich farm, the confluence of the Ilovlya and Don floodplains, memorial sites in the settlement of Ilovlya, and the Museum of Folk Architecture and Everyday Life of the Don Cossacks. A visit to the museum on this route is available by separate request. Both routes have the same stated length, so their duration, mode of travel and respective sightseeing stops are the main factors to consider when choosing between them. Check whether the routes are currently operating before your trip.
Don Cossack culture and historic sites
The Ethnographic Museum of Folk Architecture and Everyday Life of the Don Cossacks features a Cossack homestead in the style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It includes a kuren, a summer kitchen, a workshop and outbuildings. Visitors can take part in staged Cossack customs such as the “Cossack Wedding,” “A Cossack’s Farewell to Service” and the “Girls’ Gathering.” They can also ride along the banks of the Ilovlya. Confirm that the program is currently available before your visit.
Another historic landmark is the Tsaritsyn Watch Line, a defensive fortification between the Volga and the Don. Peter I conceived it; it was built in the first quarter of the 18th century to protect against devastating raids by nomadic groups. The Trehostrovskoye shrine, also known as the Ognevishche shrine, is an archaeological monument dating to the Late Bronze Age and associated with a fire cult.
The Holy Spring of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste is also known as the “Flowing Spring” and is documented as far back as 1781. Its pool has running water and is lined with marble and hardwood. Those interested in horses and riding can find another attraction at the Donchak equestrian and sports club: activities include demonstrations of various horse breeds and vaulting exercises, horse-drawn carriage rides, horseback rides, and one- and two-day excursions. Check current availability if you plan to take part in any of these activities.
Cultural attractions in Volgograd Oblast
The wider destination of Volgograd Oblast also offers its own cultural attractions. In the village of Pyatimorsk, the Park of the History of the Russian State was founded in 2012, the year marking the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Volga–Don Canal. Located on the banks of the navigable canal, it features an Alley of the Great Patriotic War with busts of generals, marshals and Generalissimo I. V. Stalin. In Volgograd, the Staraya Sarepta Museum-Reserve is an architectural ensemble in the Saxon Baroque style, with 26 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The “Battle of Stalingrad” Panorama Museum has eight halls with exhibits from the Great Patriotic War and four painted dioramas depicting episodes from the Battle of Stalingrad.
