Discover the landscape of Kasimovskiy District through two distinct themes: the Oka valley natural complex near Shcherbatovka and the historic park in Gus-Zhelezny. Natural and cultural heritage are at the heart of the area, without limiting you to just one way of travelling. As you plan your trip, consider whether you would like to focus more on the Oka landscape, the park’s history, or both.

The Oka landscape and natural landmarks

Near Shcherbatovka is the Shcherbatovsky State Nature Reserve Complex, a protected area of regional significance. Established in 2003, it aims to preserve and restore the Oka valley natural complex. The typical communities protected here include Oka floodplain meadows, oak groves, mixed forests, oxbow lakes, and alder stands. The floodplain meadows are part of the valley landscape; oxbow lakes and alder stands complement the open meadows with water and woodland. The conservation effort thus encompasses different habitat types, rather than just one aspect of the landscape.

The Shcherbatovskie Izvestnyaki limestone outcrops, with fossil fauna, are also located near the village of Shcherbatovka and are considered a valuable geological and landscape feature. The visible limestone and fossil finds are the focus here, while the protected-area complex encompasses the valley’s natural environment and its communities. Another highlight is the regional natural landmark of Syntulskoye Lake-Pond, one of the most scenic places in the region. Together, these sites give the nature theme a variety of facets, from geology and fossils to the river landscape.

Park history in Gus-Zhelezny

A cultural highlight is the park of the Batashov industrial estate in Gus-Zhelezny. The estate dates back to 1759 and is designated a cultural heritage site of federal significance. Its design is also historically noteworthy: the complex includes both a formal garden and a landscape park. The formal section had avenues, flowerbeds, and natural areas. The park was considered a model of Russian garden and park art of the late 18th to early 19th century. The different parts of the park and its historical context offer more than one perspective on the estate: its design as well as its place in Russian garden art of the period.

A stone staircase, still preserved, leads to the main avenue through the park. Some of its steps are damaged and others are heavily worn; check their condition before visiting. This allows you to appreciate the park not only through its historical significance but also through a specific architectural detail.

More places to explore in Ryazan Oblast

Beyond Kasimovskiy District, Ryazan Oblast offers its own natural and cultural attractions. Meshchersky National Park covers 103,014 hectares in Ryazansky and Klepikovsky districts. The Oka and Pra floodplains within the park were designated wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1994. Of the park’s ten established tourist routes, six are water routes. There are also five nature trails: the long Paustovsky Trail leads to Kordon 273; Okno v prirodu, Tyukov grad - Chernaya gora, Zapovednaya priroda, and U zavodi are the shorter trails. If you plan to follow any of the routes, check their current availability with the park.

The museums of Ryazan Oblast also cover a range of subjects. The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Lunkino displays artistic wood carvings, painted wood, wickerwork made from willow branches, and other exhibits; around 3,500 items are on display in total. In Spassk-Ryazansky, the Georgy Wagner Historical and Archaeological Museum has archaeological and paleontological collections, as well as a natural history section about wild animals from the Oksky Nature Reserve. A diorama of Old Ryazan and archaeological finds can be explored alongside the history of the Grand Principality of Ryazan. The museum galleries also present the history, daily life, and culture of the Spassk area from antiquity to the mid-20th century.
