In Pechorsky District, tangible evidence of Seto culture meets stone fortifications and other architectural monuments. In the village of Sigovo, the Seto Farmstead Museum preserves the material and spiritual culture of the Seto people. The sites offer different points of interest: Seto culture and everyday objects in Sigovo, stone fortresses, churches, and the ruins of Malsky Monastery.

Seto Culture and Cuisine in Sigovo

The Seto Farmstead Museum is located on the authentic estate of the Küläots family, which took shape from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The collection includes household objects, work tools, and handicrafts. Exhibits include a large loom, a horse-powered flax breaker, women's clothing, “God's cloths,” and a wooden statue of the pagan god Peko. Everyday and craft items are displayed alongside garments and a religious figure. The loom and flax breaker vividly illustrate the craft side of life; the other exhibits offer insight into further material and spiritual aspects of Seto culture.

Visitors can sample Seto cuisine at the museum and learn how to prepare it. Confirm the current availability of this offering before your trip. An annual event is the international ethnocultural festival “Setomaa: Family Reunion,” held at the museum on August 28. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the program for the relevant year.

Fortresses, Churches, and Monastery Ruins

The architectural heritage can be distinguished by type: the stone fortresses of Izborsk and Pechory remain in the district, while the ruins of Malsky Monastery are a different type of monument. The villages of Senno, Tailovo, and Kolpino are home to ancient churches that are preserved architectural monuments. The range therefore extends from fortifications to monastery ruins and churches. Those interested in architectural and cultural history can explore these different forms as distinct themes.

On the grounds of the Pskov-Pechory Holy Dormition Monastery, guided tours are held daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by prior arrangement. Check the details before traveling.

The Wider Travel Area: the Izborsk-Malsky Valley

The Izborsk-Malsky Valley is a natural monument in Pskov Oblast. It includes outcrops of Devonian bedrock, glacial landforms, the Shodnitsa, Smolka, and Obdekh rivers, and Lake Gorodishchenskoye and Lake Malskoye. The area also has diverse vegetation and rare flora and fauna. The outcrops point to Devonian bedrock, while the landforms reflect the Ice Age—two distinct chapters of Earth's history shape the valley's landscape here.
