Gdovsky District: Lake Peipus, Gdov and History
Accommodation in Gdovsky District
Gdovsky District can be explored through a range of themes: the shoreline of Lake Peipus to the west, tours and memorial sites in Gdov, and the Church of the Archangel Michael in Kobylye Gorodishche. This distinction can help with planning your trip: would you like to focus primarily on the lake’s landscape or learn about the town’s history and its sites? The museum offerings described here relate to Gdov, while Lake Peipus forms the district’s western boundary.
Lake Peipus as a landscape feature
To the west, the district borders the waters of Lake Peipus for a length of 100 kilometers. This long shoreline is a distinctive geographical feature of Gdovsky District. It gives the region a different focus from the museum tours and historical memorial sites in Gdov—a useful distinction when deciding which themes will shape your trip.
Fortress and town history in Gdov
The Gdov Museum of Local Lore offers a 90-minute walking tour of the 14th-century Gdov Fortress. The duration and route through the fortress give this tour a clearly defined focus. Another tour explores the historic part of town and is accompanied by poems by Sergei Ivanovich Kashirin. Kashirin was a poet and an honorary citizen of Gdov.
On the “Sem' mostov nad Gdovoy” walking tour, you view the town through its bridges. Which tour best suits your plans depends on whether you are more interested in the fortress, the town’s history with literary accompaniment, or the perspective from its bridges.
Memorial sites and excursions
The “Sobytia. Lyudi. Pamyat'” route starts at the museum and includes Victory Park, with its memorial markers and a T-34 tank, as well as the memorial cemetery at 25 October Square. This route therefore takes you to several places of remembrance along its described itinerary.
The museum also offers a bus excursion along Lake Peipus to the historic site of the Battle on the Ice. This site is 70 kilometers from Gdov, near the villages of Kobylye Gorodishche and Samolva. The excursion combines the lakeshore landscape with a historical destination outside Gdov. Check current dates and availability of museum excursions before planning your trip.
The Church of the Archangel Michael in Kobylye Gorodishche
In 1462, the Pskov Veche decided to build a wooden fortress at this site. A stone church dedicated to the Archangel Michael was built within the fortress. The Church of the Archangel Michael stands in the village of Kobylye Gorodishche. On September 28, 2025, Metropolitan Matfei of Pskov and Porkhov performed the solemn consecration there and celebrated the Divine Liturgy.
Exhibition themes at the Museum of Local Lore
The exhibitions at the Museum of Local Lore cover, among other subjects, the history of Gdov Fortress, Gdov’s history as a district town, Gdov as the capital of smelt, flax from A to Z, and the archaeology of the Gdov region. The themes may change. Together, they offer different ways to explore the town and its surroundings—from the history of fortifications to trade, regional subjects and archaeology.
