Two distinct nature themes stand out in Vyborgskiy rayon: the Lammin-Suo raised bog in a hilly protected landscape and an ecological educational trail on the Kiperort Peninsula. They offer different focuses for planning a trip—from bogs and lakes to the landscapes of a peninsula.

Raised Bog, Hills and Lakes

The Lammin-Suo Nature Reserve lies in a hilly landscape with numerous sand hills reaching up to 150 metres in height and deep hollows. The Lammin-Suo raised bog is located in one of these hollows, at the centre of the reserve. It is a bog typical of the Karelian Isthmus.

The landscape forms within the bog also vary considerably. Two deep lakes lie in the higher western part. Each is 12 metres deep and is a remnant of an ancient lake that silted up. The raised bog in a hollow and the lakes in the higher western part thus show two different sides of the landscape.

Those interested in how bog landscapes form and what they are like will find concrete points of reference here: the sandy ridges, the deep hollows, the centrally located raised bog and the two lakes, remnants of an ancient body of water.

Ecological Educational Trail on Kiperort

The ecological educational trail passes through the landscapes of the Kiperort Peninsula, the largest peninsula extending into Vyborgskiy zaliv.

A visit to the trail is recommended during the warm season.

Nature and Culture in Leningrad Oblast

The Vepsian Forest Nature Park lies in the easternmost part of Leningrad Oblast. It includes seven reserves with particularly strict protection regulations and numerous lakes. The largest lake is Lake Lerinskoje, in the reserve of the same name. Ancient spruce and pine forests have been preserved in the “Vepsskiy les” and “Ashchozyorskiy” reserves. They are important to the many organisms that depend on forests undisturbed by commercial use.

The nature park’s wildlife and culture also have distinctive features: brown bears are found there in greater numbers, and the wolverine, extremely rare in the region, has also been recorded. The Veps, a small people of Russia with their own culture and traditions, have traditionally lived in the nature park. These details describe the Vepsian Forest Nature Park in Leningrad Oblast and should be distinguished from the landscapes of Vyborgskiy rayon.

Another regional attraction is Koporye Fortress, a museum and a monument of ancient Russian stone architecture. It has survived in its present form since the 16th century, with parts of its masonry dating from the 13th century. You can visit without a guide using the multimedia guide “Koporskaya krepost 2.0”; check its availability before planning your visit. Climbing the walls and towers is prohibited because they are in an emergency condition.
