Teykovsky District: Archaeology, Lakes and Monastic History
Accommodation in Teykovsky District
Teykovsky District offers several distinct points of interest: the Neolithic settlement sites of Sakhtysh, Lake Koptevskoe with its area and depth measurements, and the temple complex of Zolotnikovskaya Pustyn. This allows you to shape your trip around archaeology, religious architectural history and a named natural area. Which of these themes matters most to you can also guide your choice of a suitable hotel base.
Archaeology at Lake Sakhtysh
The settlement sites of Sakhtysh are considered a reference example of the Neolithic period. Numerous settlements of hunters and fishers stood on the shore of Lake Sakhtysh, formerly known as Kleshchino; archaeologists have discovered and studied 14 of them to date. The combination of lakeshore, former settlements and investigated archaeological sites makes the area a distinct archaeological destination. Another point of interest lies near the village of Koptevo: in 1974, four kurgan burial mounds were discovered there, which are counted among the archaeological monuments of Ivanovo Oblast. Sakhtysh thus represents a series of investigated settlement sites, while the burial mounds near Koptevo add a different type of find and a clearly dated discovery.
The architectural history of Zolotnikovskaya Pustyn
Zolotnikovskaya Pustyn is home to the Uspenskaya Zolotnikovskaya temple complex, a monument of federal and regional significance. The surviving complex of Zolotnikovskaya Hermitage includes the partially destroyed Dormition Cathedral, of which only the main structure remains, as well as the ruins of the Kazan Church and the abbot's house. The different states of preservation are as much a part of the complex as its history.
A specific period is documented for 1624: about two dozen monks gathered and built a wooden Dormition Church in the forest. Jonah became abbot of the “New Hermitage in Berezovsky Bor in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God.” The surviving and ruined buildings, together with the events of 1624, offer different perspectives on the hermitage: its architectural remains and its early history.
Lake Koptevskoe as a geographical point of reference
Lake Koptevskoe is located in Teykovsky District, Ivanovo Oblast, within the territory of the Morozovskoye rural settlement. Its area is 0.51 km², and its depth is 2 to 3 meters. These measurements give the body of water a concrete geographical scale. The lake thus complements the archaeological and architectural themes with a natural-geographical focus.
