Accommodation in Mujães
If you are considering a destination in rural Minho for your trip, Mujães offers a combination of landscape, architectural heritage and local traditions. The village is set in a largely rural landscape, and Monte da Padela offers panoramic views. Other topics to consider when planning your trip include architectural heritage, a walking route and cultural events. This can help you decide whether to focus your stay on the landscape, local history or a specific cultural event.
Landscape and walking route
The Trilho do Castro de Roques is a 14.2-kilometre circular route. It passes through Mujães, Subportela, Vila de Punhe and Vila Franca in the municipality of Viana do Castelo. Its circular layout and specific length make it a distinct walking option, while the route also passes through four villages. You can factor it into your plans as a main activity and compare its length with other travel plans.
Heritage and historic sites
The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Neves is part of Mujães’ architectural heritage. The Cruzeiro do Bispo in Mámua is also part of this heritage. The Igreja Paroquial de Mujães, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Expectação, dates from the second half of the 18th century. It houses an image of Mujães’ patron saint, Nossa Senhora da Expectação.
Another historic point of interest is the Mesa dos Três Abades. According to tradition, it is believed to have been built at the beginning of the 17th century. Lugar das Neves is a triangular square where Barroselas, Mujães and Vila de Punhe meet. The village’s history is thus reflected both in its religious buildings and in a historic landmark rooted in local tradition.
Culture, feast days and customs
Auto de Floripes takes place in August at Lugar das Neves. The performance recalls the battle between Christians and Turks in the legendary story of Emperor Charlemagne. A stage is set up at Lugar das Neves every year for the performance. The local procession associated with it begins in the churchyard of the Igreja Paroquial de Mujães and ends at the Capela da Sra. das Neves.
Another annual celebration in honour of Nossa Senhora das Neves takes place on 5 August near the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Neves. If you are travelling specifically to attend a performance or celebration, check the dates in advance. This allows you to take these cultural events into account when planning your trip without treating them as part of a general visit to the historic sites.
In 2024, “Páscoa a Três” included Easter initiatives organised by the communities of Barroselas, Mujães and Vila de Punhe. The Easter Monday ceremonies held that year at Largo das Neves included the “Encontro das Cruzes”, a toast at the Mesa dos Três Abades and the raising of the flag. These examples offer a specific insight into the Easter customs described for 2024; they do not establish a current event date.
Agriculture and crafts
Agricultural production in Mujães typically includes potatoes, maize, wine and horticultural products. Local crafts include carpentry and woodworking. These topics add two further facets of rural life—production and craftsmanship—to the picture of the village’s buildings and festive traditions.
