Deocriste offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the religious and maritime history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Crasto, the PR28 – Trilho dos Três Cumes circular hiking trail, and culinary specialities such as Bacalhau and Sarrabulho. The chapel brings together religious history and views over the Lima Valley and the foothills of the Serra de Arga.

Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Crasto: History and views

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Crasto was built in the mid-16th century. An image of Nosso Senhor dos Milagres is venerated at one of its side altars. In the sacristy there is a wooden chest donated by the crew of a ship arriving from Brazil. The chapel also once served a maritime purpose: it was a landmark for ships heading to the port of Viana. The sanctuary offers special views over the Lima Valley and the foothills of the Serra de Arga. This named place thus brings together religious devotion, a historic connection to seafaring and a perspective on the landscape.

Pilgrimage and other cultural highlights

Every year, on the Sunday after Easter, a pilgrimage is held in honour of Nossa Senhora do Crasto and Senhor dos Milagres. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the programme for the relevant year: the pilgrimage takes place annually, but the specific programme may vary. The parish church of Deocriste is also among the area’s cultural and historic attractions. The same is true of Monte da Senhora do Crasto. Both complement the chapel as distinct named points of cultural interest in the area.

In 2024, a traditional Carrinhos-de-Rolamentos race was held in Deocriste, organised by the Associação Cultural e Recreativa de Deocriste. As an event, the race is distinct from the religious pilgrimage and brings its own emphasis to the area’s cultural life.

Hiking and landscape

PR28 – Trilho dos Três Cumes is a 20.30 km circular hiking trail in the União de Freguesias de Subportela, Deocriste, Portela Susã. The stated total distance is a specific planning figure. Bear the distance in mind if you include the trail in your stay and plan how to allocate your available travel time.

The landscape can also be understood through different geographical features. The Freguesia of Deocriste occupies part of the Lima basin. The Ribeira de Subportela stream flows through it, rising on the western slope of the Serra da Padela. The view from the chapel sanctuary is different: it stretches across the Lima Valley to the foothills of the Serra de Arga. The stream and its source area on the one hand, and the view and Serra de Arga on the other, are two distinct landscape features.

Local cuisine as a highlight

Bacalhau and Sarrabulho are among Deocriste’s culinary specialities. They add a culinary dimension to the area’s religious history and landscape. When deciding which themes to focus on during your stay, you can consider local cuisine alongside the chapel and the circular hiking trail.
