Labrujó: Culture, Landscape and Traditions
Accommodation in Labrujó
When choosing a hotel for a trip to Labrujó, cultural history, a festival date or the landscape may be decisive. In addition to individual cultural sites and traditions, the Rota das Paisagens Protegidas do Alto Minho passes through Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte. It is designed as an approximately 100 km circular route and can be travelled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. You can first decide whether to focus on specific cultural themes or plan your trip around a longer route.
Cultural History and Local Traditions
The Santa Luzia Chapel in Rendufe was built in 1624 by the residents of Sobrada. Its history therefore connects two places: Rendufe, where the chapel stands, and Sobrada, home of its builders. The tradition of the Mesa dos 4 Abades also dates back a long way, having existed since the 17th century. It was revived in 1988; today, it is organised by the parish councils without the involvement of the parish priests. Its long history and present-day organisers mark different chapters of the same tradition.
Antela da Cruz Vermelha is considered one of the most important tourist sites in the municipality of Labrujó, Rendufe e Vilar do Monte. A prehistoric Castro is believed to have stood nearby, on the border between Labrujó and Rendufe. The parish church and Lugar da Cruz Vermelha are also among the heritage and tourism assets of these three places.
The Senhor do Bonfim festival in Labrujó takes place on the second Sunday in August. This date provides a specific seasonal reference point for planning your trip. The craft traditions of Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte include weaving, as well as blankets and rugs made from rags and linen. These textiles offer a distinct perspective on local craftsmanship alongside the building and festival traditions.
Circular Route and Landscape
The Rota das Paisagens Protegidas do Alto Minho starts at the Centro de Interpretação das Aldeias da Mesa dos Abades in Vilar do Monte. It passes through Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte, as well as the Área Protegida de Corno de Bico. The entire loop is approximately 100 km long and can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. The distance and modes of transport answer different planning questions: the kilometre figure describes the length of the loop, while the three modes indicate different ways to walk or travel along it.
Around the Mesa dos 4 Abades, green, terraced farmland, waterways, mills and wild Garrano horses shape the landscape. From Labrujó, Rendufe and Vilar do Monte, panoramic views extend across the entire Vale da Serra da Labruja. This offers a choice between specific features of the rural landscape and wide-ranging views across the valley.
Regional Cuisine
Gastronomic experiences in the Mesa dos 4 Abades area include Arroz de sarrabulho à moda de Ponte de Lima. You can also sample regional cuisine with traditional flavours in the village restaurants. Together with the craft traditions, the local food offers another way to experience the area’s culture alongside its historic sites.
