Calvelo: Chapels, Castros and Monte de S. VerĂssimo
Accommodation in Calvelo
Calvelo lies in a valley at the foot of Monte de S. VerĂssimo and close to the A3; other good transport links provide additional ways to get there. Historic buildings, archaeological traces and a circular walking trail offer different points of interest. Check current road conditions before travelling.
Chapels and architectural history
The very old Capela de S. VerĂssimo stands on the summit of Monte de S. VerĂssimo. The Monte is part of Calvelo’s cultural and architectural heritage. The Capela do Senhor do Calvário was built by JoĂŁo de Barros in the 17th century. The building phases of Casa da Torre de Pousada date back further: the tower from which the complex originated was built in the mid-16th century. The present building, including its chapel, dates from the 18th century and is arranged around an enclosed courtyard. The tower’s origins and the present building mark different construction phases. Quinta de Pousada is also one of Calvelo’s particularly notable places. Casa de Mereces was the manor house of the Regos family. Paço de Merece has been documented since the 14th century; it was extensively remodelled in the 18th century and restored in the mid-20th century.
Comparing archaeological sites
Castro de CadĂ©m, also known as Castro dos Picoutos, dates from the second half of the 1st century BC. Its features include an earthen rampart, a medium-sized central platform and visible inner ditches. Castro de Valadares lies on the southern slope of Monte de S. VerĂssimo. Its summit is flattened; its defensive system includes an earthen rampart and several ditches that are now filled in. The differences are easy to see: CadĂ©m stands out for its central platform and visible inner ditches, while Valadares is distinguished by its hillside location and flattened summit with filled-in ditches.
Monastic tradition and archaeological traces
In Lugar da Igreja there are medieval graves that probably belonged to an earlier monastery, whose existence is traditionally recorded there. Calvelo’s parish church was a small Benedictine monastery. Pottery from Roman times may be found near the parish church. Along with the buildings and Castro sites, these clues add to the different historical layers of the place.
Walking trail and festival dates
The Trilho do Calvário is a circular walking trail in the Pequena Rota (PR) category and follows rural and forest paths. The circular trail thus complements the permanent cultural sites with a route through rural and wooded landscapes. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Senhor do Calvário is part of Calvelo’s festival traditions and is associated with the first Sunday in August. Check that year’s programme if you would like to include the date in your travel plans. The Hipódromo de Ponte de Lima in Calvelo officially reopened in 2025 after 19 years of closure.
