Coura: The Camino de Santiago, River and Archaeological Heritage
Accommodation in Coura
Coura can be explored through several distinct themes: the Camino de Santiago passes through Coura, Castro de São Martinho offers an archaeological connection to the surrounding landscape, and the Passadiços São Martinho de Coura route runs alongside the river over granite walkways. Other highlights include the cultural and educational use of a former school, as well as the parish church, Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Coura. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether the pilgrimage route, archaeology, riverside landscape or cultural interpretation should be your main focus.
The Camino de Santiago and a municipal project
Coura has a direct connection to the Camino de Santiago: the route passes through the town. In September 2025, the municipality described the project “Este é o Caminho 2.0”, which promotes the Central Portuguese Camino de Santiago – Porto and the North – for religious and nature-based tourism. The project thus identifies two ways of experiencing the route: its religious significance and nature-based tourism.
The project aimed to improve mobility and safety along the Camino de Santiago in all four municipalities. Appropriate signage and infrastructure upgrades were among the proposed measures. This distinction is important when planning your trip: the route passes through Coura, while the mobility and safety measures are project goals, not a description of completed work.
Archaeological site and landscape
Castro de São Martinho is also known as “Povoado Fortificado da Portela da Bustarenga”; both names refer to the same archaeological site. The Castro is near Coura and offers a good view of the surrounding landscape. Here, an archaeological connection and views across the landscape come together.
The Roman road, Via romana de Braga a Tui, also runs near the Castro. It is a separate historical point of interest, not another name for the Castro. So, when considering Coura’s historical sites, it is worth distinguishing between the archaeological site and the nearby road.
River, culture and religious connections
The Passadiços São Martinho de Coura route runs alongside the Coura River and crosses granite walkways. The river and the path’s surface shape the scenery here, setting this route apart from the Castro’s archaeological focus. As conditions on site can change, it is best to check the route’s condition before your visit.
An interpretation project for São Martinho de Coura and Romarigães promotes the local population’s identity in connection with the Coura River. The river is therefore not just part of the route’s landscape, but also a theme for cultural interpretation. The project explicitly connects this interpretation with the two places.
The Antiga Escola Primária de São Martinho de Coura was refurbished in 2021. In 2023, the municipality described it as a cultural and educational centre serving the community; its programme may change. Alongside routes and archaeological sites, cultural interpretation is another option to consider for your trip.
The Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Coura is located in Coura. It adds a named parish church to the religious perspective of the Camino de Santiago. The two connections are distinct: the Camino de Santiago passes through Coura, while the church is a parish church located in Coura.
