In Paredes De Coura, a protected landscape and a rich architectural and cultural history come together. The Caminho de Santiago passes through the area; churches, archaeological sites and a regional museum also tell stories of different eras. You can shape your stay around your interests, whether nature, the pilgrimage route, history or culture is your main focus.

Landscape at Corno de Bico

The Paisagem Protegida do Corno de Bico lies on the southeastern edge of the municipality of Paredes De Coura. The protected area includes the parishes of Bico, Castanheira, Cristelo, Parada and Vascões. Mostly mountainous and characterised by rounded forms, Corno de Bico reaches an elevation of 883 metres and is the highest point in the northern region. The headwaters of the Coura, Labruja and Vez rivers are also within the protected area. The elevation and river sources offer two different perspectives on the landscape: its distinctive high point on the one hand, and its importance as the source area of three rivers on the other.

A viewpoint offers another perspective: from the Miradouro da Senhora da Pena, you can look out over the Coura Valley and its agricultural land. The view takes in not only the contours of the terrain, but also how the valley is used.

The Caminho de Santiago near Cabanas

The Caminho de Santiago reaches Paredes De Coura at Cabanas, after descending from Portela Grande da Labruja along the ridge. Near Cabanas, the route passes a group of traditional watermills that are in good condition and still in use. The Caminho then continues from Paredes De Coura to Valença. Cabanas is a specific point where the route meets a traditional craft; its onward course to Valença also shows it as part of a longer route.

Archaeology and architectural history

The Antela da Cruz Vermelha offers a glimpse into prehistory: it is dated to around 2500 BC. Of a group of five dolmens, it is the only one currently preserved in this area. Much later, the Igreja de S. Pedro de Rubiães was built in 1295. The Ponte romana de Rubiães also tells of different construction phases: the present structure is medieval and was later altered, probably in the modern era. These sites do not represent a single era; instead, they reveal the passage of time between a prehistoric monument, a medieval church and a bridge subsequently modified.

Other religious buildings include the Capela da Pena, an 18th-century granite chapel on Monte da Pena. The Capela de S. Bento da Porta Aberta, from the same century, is considered an important example of rural Baroque architecture in Alto Minho. The Capela do Divino Espírito Santo is also an 18th-century building and is home to the Real Confraria do Divino Espírito Santo. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Livramento has an even earlier founding story: it traces its origins to a chapel founded in 1733 by the clergy Domingos Fernandes “o Velho” and Gonçalo Fernandes “O Novo”.

Museum, literature and culture

The Museu Regional de Paredes de Coura is housed in the Casa da Veiga, whose present-day structure dates from the 18th century. Its three exhibition galleries are named “Impressão Digital”, “Mobilização da Terra” and “Arqueologia”. The Eira Comunitária de Porreiras, with its eight traditional Espigueiros, offers another way to explore local history. Literature is also part of the cultural landscape: Aquilino Ribeiro immortalised the Quinta do Amparo in his novel “A Casa Grande de Romarigães”.

A description of the Casa Grande de Romarigães published in 2023 mentions a timeline about Aquilino Ribeiro’s life and work on the ground floor. As visitor arrangements may change, check them in advance. The Centro Cultural de Paredes de Coura is dedicated to promoting, creating and disseminating culture. Its programme ranges from classical music and jazz to theatre, dance and opera, as well as literature and cinema; for specific events, check the current programme.

Regional cuisine and your stay

Regional dishes include trout from the Coura River, Rojões à forno do Minho and local goat. If you would like to try one of these dishes, check the menu at the restaurant in question. The Pontão at Praia Fluvial do Taboão is accessible via the N303 national road; check the route before your visit.

First decide which of these aspects interests you most, and take it into account when choosing your base.
