Pias lies on the banks of the Gadanha River and is also part of the Caminho Minhoto-Ribeiro, a historic route connecting the Minho with Santiago de Compostela. The river and the route offer different starting points for a trip. The church, local traditions and the food culture of Monção add to the experience.

The River and the Historical Route

The Gadanha is an immediate geographical point of reference for Pias. The Caminho Minhoto-Ribeiro, in turn, places the town within a historic link between the Minho and Santiago de Compostela. If you are interested in historic routes, this wider regional connection offers another way to plan your trip.

Mountain biking is another topic with a specific date: on 23 March 2026, Pias was the starting point for another edition of the BTT Portela event. This date records a specific event; check the relevant dates for future events.

Church and Local Traditions

The Igreja Paroquial de Pias brings together several layers of art and architectural history. Its religious architecture is dated to the transition between the Baroque and Neoclassical periods and to the 17th and 18th centuries. Major extension work is said to have taken place between 1692 and 1698: the church was lengthened and raised, and two new towers were added.

A notable detail can be found on the ceiling of the nave. It consists of 60 wooden coffers depicting scenes of the Annunciation and the Passion. The paintings date from the 20th century. Thus, the architectural period and the more recent date of the ceiling paintings sit side by side. The Função do Senhor dos Passos is also part of the local religious tradition; it is more than 300 years old.

Places of Remembrance and Traditional Customs

In Cristelo, an old sundial once showed the time to earlier generations. The Pátios de Guistola had a different historical function: during funeral processions, a stone served as a support for the coffins and also as a resting place for the bearers. Both examples offer a glimpse into the everyday life and customs of earlier generations.

In Fontão, according to local tradition, a memorial cross commemorates the death of a member of the military. The story goes that his horse was startled at a stream. The tradition of exchanging old oxen on 25 July is also associated with Fontão. In Lamoso, hot, steaming water from the Fonte dos Nabais was once used for washing clothes. The Capela da Senhora da Vista once served as a burial place.

Cordeiro à Moda de Monção

Pias is also connected with regional food culture. Cordeiro à Moda de Monção is a traditional Easter dish. It is traditionally prepared in an earthenware pot in a wood-fired oven; known by its popular name, Foda à Monção, it takes more than 24 hours to prepare.

The dish is celebrated at the Feira da Foda, a food fair in the Freguesia of Pias in Monção. A 2024 report described it as an annual event held in March; specific event dates may change. The 2025 edition’s programme included tastings of Cordeiro à Moda de Monção. If you are planning your trip around the fair, check the latest event dates in advance.
