Monção: Walls, Museums and Walks Along the Minho
Accommodation in Monção
Monção offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay: walks along the walls and the Rio Minho, historic buildings, museum collections and an annual tradition.
Walls, Bastions and Paths Along the Minho
The Muralhas de Monção were classified as a National Monument by decree on 16 June 1910. They offer peaceful walks with views of the Rio Minho, the Galician bank and Parque das Caldas. This brings together a protected historic structure and clear views of the river landscape and park.
A separate pedestrian route is the wooden Passadiço A Galiza Mail’o Minho. The walkway runs alongside the Rio Minho and connects Monção’s historic centre with Parque das Caldas. While the walls invite visitors to enjoy walks with views, the walkway passes between two named areas of the town and park.
The documented history of construction at Castelo de Monção begins in 1306: D. Dinis ordered its construction as part of a nationwide plan to strengthen defences. The bastions facing the Rio Minho are now excellent viewpoints. In addition, most of the Castelo’s walls are easy to walk along. So, alongside a walk on the Muralhas, you can also walk along a large part of the Castelo walls.
Museums and Architectural History
Casa Museu de Monção is housed in an 18th-century building. The first floor has been preserved as it was when the house was used as a family residence. Casa Museu also offers a glimpse into the way of life of an upper-middle-class family in the early 20th century. Its architecture and museum theme thus offer two different historical perspectives: the 18th-century building and the family life depicted from the early 20th century.
The collection includes French and Portuguese ebony furniture, tapestries, silverware, porcelain and crystal, as well as personal belongings of Teresa Salgueiro. Visitors interested in Casa Museu will find not only the preserved interior of the first floor, but also a wide-ranging collection of different objects.
Museu Monção & Memórias is located on Rua da Independência in Edifício Souto D’El Rei in Monção. This address provides a specific point of reference for anyone wishing to include the museum in their exploration of the town.
Igreja Matriz de Monção is also part of the town’s architectural history: the Gothic church was built in 1308. Capela de São Sebastião is located inside the church. The Portuguese state classified it as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” because of its Manueline features. The church and chapel thus bring two distinct architectural points of interest into the same visit.
Tradition and Recreation
Festa da Coca is celebrated every year on the Thursday of the Feast of Corpus Christi. If you would like to include the tradition in your travel plans, check the date of Corpus Christi for the year in question.
Termas de Monção offer a different experience: they invite visitors to walk among numerous centuries-old trees and are a place for relaxation and leisure. This means Monção offers not only historic buildings and collections, but also a setting shaped by old trees for walks and relaxation.
When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the options by their character: the walls and walkway offer different settings for walks; Casa Museu and Igreja Matriz draw attention to architectural history and collections; and Festa da Coca is tied to a recurring festival date. If you are looking for a hotel in Monção, prioritising these options can help you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
