Discover Melgaço: History, Museums and Routes
Accommodation in Melgaço
Melgaço combines historic buildings and museums with a riverside route and a focus on Alvarinho. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering what matters most to you: architecture and history, a route along the Minho, or wine and regional products. The different themes can help guide your travel plans without limiting you to just one kind of outing.
Buildings and Landmarks in Melgaço
The Muralha de Melgaço is a national monument dating from the 12th century. The Castelo de Melgaço is also a historic fortress: it was built by order of Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th or 13th century. The Igreja Matriz de Melgaço adds Romanesque architecture to this picture. The 12th-century church is in the historic centre and retains two Romanesque portals. Together, these sites offer a range of architectural forms and historical contexts rather than a single, uniform impression.
The Fonte de S. João fountain and the Estátua de Inês Negra provide further points of interest. The 18th-century Baroque fountain stands in Praça da República. The statue is beside the castle wall and was unveiled on 10 June 1995. Together with the fortifications and the church, these buildings and landmarks can draw your attention to different facets of the town.
Museums with Different Areas of Focus
The Núcleo Museológico da Torre de Menagem e as Ruínas Arqueológicas explores Melgaço’s architectural, historical and cultural heritage. Its indoor exhibition covers architectural and archaeological heritage from prehistory to the present day. The archaeological ruins include a medieval moat and paving from different periods. The exhibition’s broad time span and the tangible traces of buildings offer two distinct ways of exploring the past.
The Museu de Cinema de Melgaço Jean Loup Passek opened in 2005 in the historic part of town. It spans two floors and includes a permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition. The Espaço Memória e Fronteira has a different focus: it preserves Melgaço’s recent history, with an emphasis on emigration and smuggling. One of the exhibition’s topics is illegal emigration in the 1960s and 1970s. Those interested in history can thus explore not only architecture and archaeology but also stories of more recent lives and migration.
Along the Minho
The Percurso Marginal do Rio Minho begins in the town centre, beside the Igreja Matriz and the Igreja da Misericórdia. It includes a wooden riverside boardwalk about 1,500 metres long and ends in Peso after approximately 5.7 kilometres. These two distances refer to different lengths: the shorter one is for the boardwalk, while the longer one is for the full route. This distinction is useful when planning, as it helps you tell the section from the entire route.
For another view of the surroundings, climb to the Torre de Menagem, where views extend across the neighbouring mountains and Melgaço’s historic centre. The riverside route and the viewpoint offer different perspectives on the landscape and townscape, without being the same kind of experience.
Alvarinho and Regional Products
Solar do Alvarinho is a venue in the historic centre dedicated to Alvarinho wine and typical products from Melgaço. Visitors can sample numerous Alvarinho wines from the region there, free of charge. The Festa do Alvarinho e do Fumeiro de Melgaço has been held annually since 1995. It showcases the new Alvarinho vintage and that year’s Fumeiro. Alvarinho is therefore featured both as a wine to sample and as part of a recurring event. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festa, check the dates for the relevant event year.
