If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Lamas De Mouro, the local trails, nature watching and cultural sites can shape your travel plans. An important landmark is the Porta de Lamas de Mouro, one of the entrances to Peneda-Gerês National Park. It serves park visitors as a reception, recreation and information centre. The specific routes and cultural sites give you points of reference for planning your stay.

Trails and route options

The interpretation trail starts and ends beside the Porta de Lamas de Mouro. The approximately 12 km Lamas de Mouro–Dorna trail also starts beside the Porta and ends at the Inverneira de Dorna in Castro Laboreiro. The linear Lamas de Mouro–Cevide trail is approximately 16 km long and starts beside the Alminhas do Carvalho. The 9.3 km Lamas de Mouro–Parada do Monte trail is designated TRILHO X. The second stage runs for approximately 7 km from Castro Laboreiro towards Lamas de Mouro; the third starts at the Porta and runs just over 8 km to the village of Peneda. The routes and stages mentioned therefore range from around 7 to 16 km. The type of walk also differs: the interpretation trail starts and ends beside the Porta, the Cevide route is linear, and the two stages start in Castro Laboreiro and at the Porta, respectively.

Landscape and birdwatching

The Rio Mouro rises in Lamas de Mouro, where three springs converge. The interpretation trail passes through different habitats where several bird species can be observed. It also crosses a small woodland and offers views of the Rio Mouro watercourse. The route to Dorna follows a different course: it runs alongside the Rio Mouro and passes granite outcrops. The two trails thus offer different connections with nature – from views of the watercourse to a route beside the river and the granite rocks.

Culture and local history

The Igreja Paroquial de São João Baptista is a medieval Romanesque church. Romanesque refers to the architectural style, while medieval refers to the period; its interior was formerly used as a baptistery for the neighbouring villages. The church can be reached from the EN 202 via a municipal road. The EN 202 connects Melgaço with Castro Laboreiro; parking is available near the church. The Alminhas do Carvalho, near the start of the linear trail to Cevide, are part of the local folk artistic and religious heritage. The local festival calendar includes the Festa de São João Batista on 24 June.

The Porta de Lamas de Mouro houses a permanent exhibition about land management and the natural and cultural features of the Melgaço area. The Porta also has a picnic area, changing rooms and a campsite. Along with its role as a reception, recreation and information centre, it is another point of reference alongside the trails and cultural sites of Lamas de Mouro.
