Montijo can be explored through two themes: its cultural heritage and its relationship with the Tagus. Churches, mills and museums offer different historical perspectives, while the river takes centre stage for its scenery, walks and wildlife watching. If you are looking for a hotel in Montijo, these themes can help you decide what you want your trip to focus on. The places and activities offer different perspectives, from sacred imagery and fishing history to excursions on the water.

Churches and mills in Montijo

The Igreja do Divino Espírito Santo – Matriz de Montijo was built in the early 15th century and later altered several times. Its 18th-century tiles depict scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, the work of the Holy Spirit and Eucharistic prefigurations. Alongside its architectural history, these motifs give the church another cultural dimension, connecting religious themes with the visual art of the period in which they were created.

The Moinho de Maré do Cais dates from the 13th or 14th century and is powered by tidal waters. It is considered the only building in the Tagus estuary whose original mechanisms had survived until its complete restoration. The mill is therefore notable both for its age and for its distinctive technical connection to the tides. The Moinho de Vento do Esteval opened to the public as a museum space in 2000.

River history and nature on the Tagus

Montijo’s history has always been connected to the Tagus. For many years, artisanal fishing and transporting goods to Lisbon were among the most important activities linked to the river. The Museu do Pescador explores this connection: it houses 80 objects associated with the identity, culture and customs of Montijo’s fishing community. Images and artefacts also convey an important part of the river’s history. The museum thus focuses both on the community and its longstanding relationship with the Tagus.

The Zona Ribeirinha offers a riverside walk, with Lisbon and flamingos in the background. Tourist excursions on the Tagus reveal the distinctive landscapes of Montijo in detail from the water; the estuary also has several places of interest. On the excursions, visitors can spot flamingos, black-winged stilts, cormorants and avocets. Walking along the riverbank and travelling on the river thus offer different perspectives on the landscape and its birdlife.

Museums and cultural attractions

The Casa da Música Jorge Peixinho includes an auditorium and the Museu Jorge Peixinho. The auditorium has its own programme, directed by Companhia Mascarenhas-Martins; individual programmes vary. The Cinema-Teatro Joaquim d’Almeida adds its own timeline to the cultural history of Montijo: it was built in 1957, acquired by the municipality in 1999 and renovated in 2005. It then reopened to the public with a regular cultural programme.

At the Museu Municipal Casa Mora, visitors can explore the building, its garden and the municipal museum exhibition. The range of cultural venues therefore extends from a house with a garden and museum exhibition to facilities with an auditorium, museum or cultural programme. Their different focuses can help you plan your trip around a particular theme, such as local history and collections or the city’s cultural programme.

Festas de SĂŁo Pedro

Held annually at the end of June, the Festas de SĂŁo Pedro include bullfights and running of the bulls. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates. As a recurring event in the annual calendar, the Festas offer a different cultural focus from the churches, museums and mills that shape the area throughout the year. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a visit centred on local heritage and a stay around the festival.
