Atalaia: Pilgrimage, Azulejos and Agricultural Museum
Accommodation in Atalaia
Atalaia sits on a hill overlooking the Tagus estuary. The Santuário, its religious traditions and the Museu Agrícola highlight different aspects of the town: sacred art, an annual pilgrimage date and the history of agricultural work. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a fixed event, a long route and the themes explored by the museums.
Church, Pilgrimage and Cultural Heritage
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia has been a place of devotion since at least 1409. The Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia is a small religious building, rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside the nave, blue-and-white azulejo panels from the 18th century cover the walls, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin. These images are linked to the site’s long history of devotion.
Inside, an 18th-century altarpiece made of Brazilian wood frames the image of Nossa Senhora da Atalaia. The main cross in the Santuário courtyard was erected in 1551. In 2010, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia, together with three crosses, was classified as a Monument of Public Interest (MIP).
The pilgrimage to the Santuário takes place every year on the last Sunday in August. The Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia, also known as Festa Grande, run from 25 to 28 August. Their traditions include círios, folk dances and arraiais; the annual programme may vary. If you are travelling for the pilgrimage or Festa Grande, check the dates and programme details for the relevant year.
Agriculture and Wine at the Museu Agrícola
The Museu Agrícola da Atalaia is located within the urban area, beside the steps leading to the Santuário. It is situated at Quinta Nova da Atalaia and is the first museum space in the Concelho Montijo dedicated to agriculture. Traces of the original buildings suggest that Quinta Nova probably dates back to the 18th century.
The Museu Agrícola preserves traditional agricultural techniques and knowledge, especially those related to olive oil and wine. The equipment at the Lagar de Azeite is well preserved and can be put into operation for educational demonstrations. The Lagar de Vinho and the Adega give visitors the opportunity to learn about wine production, preservation and storage. Visitor arrangements may change, so check in advance for current demonstrations and educational activities.
The Rota da Atalaia
The Rota da Atalaia is designed as a long walk or hike. It aims to follow the original route and reflect the historical reality of the time as closely as possible. This makes it a different travel option from the pilgrimage, which takes place on a set date each year. Check the latest information before planning your route, as route details may be updated.
The route also includes the Fonte Nossa Senhora da Atalaia. It is located in the neighbouring municipality of Alcochete and was included in the route because of its proximity to the Santuário Nossa Senhora da Atalaia. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the fixed pilgrimage date, the museum themes or the long route.
